The other day on the garbage truck I went out with Greg who’s been with Council for 30 years! This time, I went out on the road in a sweeper with Troy who’s been with Council for 8 years! Troy is one of our sweeper operators who is part of a team that works overnight across 2 shifts keeping our gutters, streets and town centres clean and tidy from leaf litter and rubbish! Troy operates one of our larger sweepers. Some things that I didn’t know that I now know after going out on the road: 🧹 The sweeper has 3 brooms! One on each side, one underneath 🕹️ There’s a joystick in the cabin to help operate the brooms on the side as well as OVER 15 buttons depending on which functionality you need! (Water, all brooms, suction, increase in speed etc) 🛞 Two steering wheels depending which side you need to be on! 💦 There’s a large water tank that holds up to 1000L of water to reduce the amount of dust up in the air 🚤 🚘 🏍️ 🛻 A challenge in sweeping the street is parked or stationary items on the road 🚧 Traffic calming devices also might mean we can’t get in between the devices and the road with a sweeper because it doesn’t fit not because we don’t want to! (We have other methods to get to these) 📸 Every sweeper has a camera detecting road defects and graffiti - automatically our system creates jobs for the relevant team! AMAZING (more on this another time!) 🌲 Sticks don’t always cooperate and can get stuck in the hose meaning we have to clear them out of the way before coming through 📷 They have the same system as the waste trucks to take photos on the road Residents can use our street sweeping app to see when you street is due to be swept, check this here: https://lnkd.in/g73iNAiV If anyone here is a resident, check when your street is due to be swept and help us by moving stationary items off the road so the team can come through and sweep up all those leaves! Note - we appreciate that moving stationary items off the road can’t happen all the time but we will appreciate when they can be! 🤝

Let’s Talk Trash—Literally! 🗑️ Driving through the neighborhood on garbage day got me thinking: There really is etiquette for everything, even for something as simple as trash cans! But don’t be scared of the word “etiquette.” Think of it as asking yourself, “How can I be nicer? How can I make life easier for others? How can I be more respectful?” Here’s a little garbage can etiquette to keep in mind: - Keep it on your side: When putting out your big trash bins, keep them on your side of the driveway—don’t encroach on your neighbor’s space. - Bring it in on time: After pickup, bring your trash cans in as soon as you can. I get it—life’s busy! But try not to leave them out for over 24 hours. Especially here in Las Vegas, where the wind can turn your trash can into a rolling obstacle course. Curbside garbage containers should be piloted in multiple locations BEFORE rules and regulations are proposed and bills are passed. Jackson Heights will not have the same issues and needs as Park Slope or Downtown Brooklyn or the Lower East Side or the Upper West Side. As stated in our testimony before the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste, bringing working groups together BEFORE passing and implementing legislation, rules, and regulations can ensure the process is as smooth as possible. When questioned by Council Member Restler, Commissioner Tisch said she wished she had considered contracting for 25 gallon bins to fit in existing exterior garbage cabinets for small buildings. Fitting the NYC Bins into existing spaces was a concern we expressed at the rules hearing. Creating a working group or even hosting town halls before rule promulgation would have most likely indicated the need. For large and small buildings alike, garbage is a huge logistical and staffing issue. The curbside containers (if they are as pictured) will present problems with safety at night, as they block visibility. For DSNY, containerization is a considerable investment - DSNY paid approximately $7 million for a ten-year contract to purchase, install, and maintain Community District 9's pilot equipment for buildings 31 units and larger. We need to get containerization right - not just done.
