https://lnkd.in/gfzBUEsC At this stage of my life, with a BTO on the way and therefore, a wedding to look forward to in the near future, I couldn't help but notice this particular article on wedding costs. Obviously, behind the glitz and glamour of all the weddings you and I have attended over the course of our lives, there was, funding it, a terribly strained couple of bank accounts, stretched to their limits in order to satisfy arbitrary societal norms, and frankly I'd agree with the point of the article; most of it's all bollocks anyway. In a wider sense however, it got me thinking; why do we feel like we have to follow "societal norms"? Our shared ancestry that survived off of collectivism? The human need to conform? I'd like to instead suggest that we don't always have to try so hard just to fit in. Like with wedding planning, consider what is essential and what isn't (obviously a societal norm like "obeying the law" is quite essential) and just do you.

📉 Will Signet Jewelers Jewellers survive the end of marriage? 💍 Signet is the parent company of Kay’s, Jared (yes, they own me) and Diamond Direct. Their stock saw an 11% percent decline this week and the only thing that can save them is strategic renewal. Their CEO, Virginia Drosos, said on the earnings call “We believe the shape of this year’s engagement growth will have a more material impact in the second half of the year, as customers continue to plan the majority of engagements around October through February” This is corporate speak for “we hope your sister-in-law’s boyfriend is just waiting for the holidays to propose.” But the truth is that marriage rates are in decline globally. In 2020, 98,355 marriages were registered in Canada—the lowest annual number since 1938. Marriages registered in 2020 amounted to one-third of the number registered in 2019. These numbers are consistent for most of the OECD. If you rely on engagement rings, less marriages mean less engagements. Demographics are the #1 leading indicator! With the rise of lab grown diamonds, when they do buy, they are spending less. But all this is ok! Signet has a strong set of Fundamental Capabilities. A strong retail network, supplier and manufacturing relationships and brand equity. Jewellery preexists marriage and the desire to ornament and decorate has not abated (see rise in tattoos). What the company needs to do is uncover new needs and create new occasions. The engagement ring itself was only popularized by De Beers after 1938. I am not suggesting we are all going down to Kay’s to get our ornamental breastplates. But new forms of connection and relationships have evolved over the past 20 years (chosen families, etc) and these bonds deserve recognition. So call us Signet Jewelers and get our crack team of anthropologists and foresight strategists to work reframing how you think about your customers. We will take payment in uncut gems.
