Isn't it a blessing to have someone lend an ear to hear us, our challenges, highs, and lows, offering moral support and guidance? Indeed, my students are fortunate, as we have a robust alumni network ever-eager to lend a helping hand. Just the other day, we were graced by one such alumnus Zubin Souza who engaged with our current students. Zubin encouraged students to choose internships strategically. He stressed that internships should not just be a checkbox on a resume but opportunities to enhance employ-ability skills. By selecting internships aligned with their career goals, students can gain practical insights, network, and increase their chances of securing meaningful employment. Addressing a query on programming languages, Zubin left an indelible mark: "Don't chase languages; master fundamentals." Zubin's advice on tech trends was easy – just pick what fits your dream job. Don't follow the trends blindly; just go for what makes sense for where you wanna work. To resonate in the job market, Zubin encouraged students to play an active part in hackathons, tech symposiums, and skill-sharpening endeavors. Zubin's mantra: "Do what you love!" Success is not just about achievements but finding joy in the journey. Thanks, Zubin, for your wisdom – looking forward to more enriching sessions!

"Show, don't tell" is the golden rule of writing. A new program shows that this might apply to hiring in tech, too. A new internship program from Break Through Tech is placing students directly on the job to see how they'd fit at a company. These three-week crash courses known as "Sprinternships" circumvent technical interviews. “Hiring managers can get a better sense for a student’s long-term potential by seeing them perform in a natural environment rather than in a hypothetical, problem-solving scenario in front of a whiteboard, like what is typically presented in a traditional tech interview,” says Break Through Tech Miami Program Director Nimmi Arunachalam. “Evaluating students in an organic setting, where they work on a team and solve a challenging project, could be a better way of predicting future performance and fit.” Recently, as part of a Sprinternship partnership between Break Through Tech Miami and American Express, 25 FIU students were offered either jobs or longer internships after completing the program. Check out more about how this program is helping talented students thrive here: https://lnkd.in/eKuDSUMB Florida International University - College of Engineering & Computing FIU KFSCIS #techjobs #itjobs

I recently had the privilege of participating in mock interviews with undergraduate computer science students attending Northwest Missouri State University . The experience was truly energizing and reinforced my belief in the bright future of tech. These students showcased not only their technical skills but also their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Their fresh perspectives and innovative ideas were a reminder of why I love working in health IT. To all undergraduate students looking to transition into internships or jobs, here's my advice: 💡 Leverage your coursework: Relate your academic projects to real-world scenarios. 💡 Embrace continuous learning: Stay updated with industry trends and new technologies. 💡 Develop soft skills: Communication and teamwork are just as crucial as technical abilities. 💡 Seek mentorship and network: Connect with professionals in your field of interest. 💡 Build a portfolio: Showcase your projects, even if they're personal or academic. Remember, every professional started somewhere. Your unique perspective and willingness to learn are valuable assets. To my network: 🔗What advice would you add for students stepping into the tech world? 🔗Please share links to tech internships in the comments. Navigating the Challenges in the Software Industry: A Student's Perspective In the current landscape, we're seeing an interesting yet challenging trend: the software industry is booming with opportunities, but the number of graduates in computer science far exceeds the available positions. For students pursuing a career in this dynamic field, it's crucial to go beyond just earning a degree. Here are a few tips to enhance employability: 1. Focus on Practical Skills: Hands-on experience with coding, software development, and problem-solving is invaluable. 2. Internships Matter: Gaining real-world experience through internships can set you apart from the competition. 3. Certifications and Courses: Pursuing additional certifications and online courses can demonstrate your commitment and expertise. 4. Networking: Building connections within the industry can open doors to opportunities that aren't always advertised.
