Driving Impactful Change as Donor Relations Manager | Co-Leading Women in Nature (WIN) | Passionate about Positive Global Impact
🌎 Happy Earth Day! 🌿 Almost 13 years ago, I had the privilege of joining The Nature Conservancy (TNC). It was a decision that transformed my life. Here, I didn’t just align my profession with my vocation and passion; I discovered a profound connection with our ecosystem and with each other. As I watched my TNC colleagues work tirelessly—driven by true passion and unwavering dedication—I saw them as superheroes, quietly saving our planet every day. Over the years, that perception evolved. I realized that each of us can be a hero, not only because of the challenges we face (though climate change’s effects are increasingly evident) but because, like nature itself, we all have a vital role to play, no matter of its size, everyone equally important and one interdependent from each other. Today, on Earth Day, let’s explore different ways we can contribute: * Volunteering With Us: Want to get your hands dirty for nature? Help a preserve remove invasive species or collect data. Or virtually volunteer your professional skills. * Explore Our Externships: We partnered with The National Geographic Society to create unique opportunities for people 18-25 to gain conservation training and experience. * Share Lessons from Nature Lab: Explore virtual field trips and nature teaching guides great for classrooms or homes from Nature Lab, our youth curriculum platform. * Plant a Tree (or Three!): When we restore critical forests, we fight climate change and support biodiversity. Help us reach our goal of planting a billion trees! * You can see other ways to celebrate Earth Day on the link below. Together, we can create a future where people and nature thrive harmoniously. Let’s be stewards of this beautiful blue planet we call home. 🌏🌱 #EarthDay #NatureConservancy #Sustainability

Where does #workforcedevelopment and #genz intersect? This is the big question I committed to deep diving this year. I believe that to properly build toward a future where the #futureworkforce continues to be imaginative and excited about the next generation of career possibilities, we need to 🗺 Understand how they explore the world. 🧭 Show them how their strengths and interests are their superpowers 🛠 Do a better job showing them how to get to where they want to go to achieve what’s next At Future Gen, we believe everybody should love what they do. To make this happen, we have grounded our solution as a place where workforce talent, community partners, and employers can lean into their existing local ecosystems. I have more to share on our progress soon. In the meantime, going to do a deep dive into what impacts Prop 1 will have in #Tacoma. It is titled: Neighborhood School Improvements & Safety Upgrades. But at a high level, it will impact over 30 elementary schools, 10 middle schools, and 10 high schools. Some cool programs I see listed include the #maritime Skills Center and expanding career and technical education resources in agricultural sciences and wildlife studies. #careerexploration #students #communityinvestment #careereducation #technicaleducation

Let's get it technically right- Today is Summer Solstice- Which means The time between Dawn and Dusk would be unusually longer than the time between Dusk and the Dawn. This phenomenon is taking place in the Northern hemisphere of the Earth Surface, hence Summer Solstice is experienced only in this part. The situation is opposite in the Southern Hemisphere. Happy Summer Solstice! #ScientificTemper #ESG #KnowScience #EarthMatters #SummerSolstice #LongestDay #Sustainability Corporate Professionals

I had the privilege of attending a captivating Lunch & Learn event today, organized by the GVA KPMG Sustainability Committee and in partnership with Sea Smart. On this Earth Day, our focus was on 'Species at Risk,' with a special emphasis on the orcas inhabiting the Salish Sea. Elaine Leung, PhD shed light on the myriad threats facing these magnificent creatures, ranging from the disruptive sonic noise emitted by shipping activities to the far-reaching impacts of land-based endeavors like construction and mining. These disturbances profoundly affect orca navigation, communication, and ultimately, their survival. Orcas are not only apex predators essential to the health of the Salish Sea ecosystem but also creatures of complex social structures with unique communities, languages, and diets. This complexity underlines the intricate balance and interconnectivity of their ecosystems—our well-being included. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and the ECHO Program are making strides in reducing the impact of maritime activities on these at-risk whales by developing quieter vessel technologies. Sea Smart played a key role in today's event. This charity offers workshops, online courses, and shoreline cleanups, providing solutions-based, action-oriented education on marine conservation. They inspire individuals and organizations to protect our oceans through actionable steps, such as reducing consumption of Chinook salmon, which is vital to local orca diets, and farmed Atlantic salmon. As stewards of Earth, we must ensure the awe-inspiring beauty and the crucial services of healthy ecosystems for future generations. Our choices today shape the health and vitality of our planet tomorrow. #EarthDay #SpeciesAtRisk #SeaSmart #Sustainability #MarineConservation

My time in the Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) has come to an end, and I’m excited to share what I’ve been working on all summer! Alongside my co-leads, Sean Perry and Tianqi Zhang, I had the privilege of leading the Acoustic Species Identification (ASID) project within the Engineers For Exploration lab, which focuses on using deep learning to track bird populations through passive acoustic monitoring. This research, conducted in collaboration with the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, is essential for monitoring biodiversity and addressing the impacts of climate change. At the start of the summer, I evaluated our existing methods and analysed the results, which led us to explore better ways to encode time sequencing into our models. This exploration shifted our focus toward transformer-based approaches which allows us to capture more contextual information. I specifically worked on further developing a CNN-Transformer hybrid, which we believe will significantly improve the accuracy of bird species classification. We also explored innovative ways to better represent bird vocalisations, particularly in noisy environments. In parallel, we started developing a desktop application to simplify model deployment and data management for end-users. While still in progress, this application allows for streamlined data processing and will continue to evolve during the academic year, making it a vital tool for researchers working with large audio datasets. I had the opportunity to present this work at the SRC (Summer Research Conference), where I shared our team's findings and received valuable feedback from the academic community. As project lead, I gained extensive experience in directing a team of full-time researchers and balancing my own research responsibilities. I’m incredibly grateful to Prof. Ryan Kastner and Nathan Hui for their mentorship and support throughout the summer. I also want to thank Prof. Curt Schurgers for mentoring me throughout the SRIP program. Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of my amazing team—Sean Perry, Tianqi Zhang, Jonathan He, and Surangana Aryal. Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue as a project lead for the ASID project and will be working on refining our models, delving deeper into transformers and hybrid architectures, and further developing the desktop application. I’m eager to see how our research will continue to advance biodiversity conservation as we move into the next phase!
