Thank you Erin Berenz for shedding light on this important topic! It's time to dispel the long-held misconception that discussing trauma can re-traumatize individuals. Decades of trauma and PTSD research have shown that trauma disclosure, in the context of assessment and trauma-focused psychotherapy provided by trained mental health professionals, can be sensitively and effectively responded to and serve as a positive experience for the survivor. From an educational perspective, awareness regarding the nature, prevalence, impact, and potential impairing sequela of trauma exposure is greatly needed. This can help survivors share their experiences and not reinforce the unhelpful belief that their talking about their trauma should be avoided. Let's all work towards enhancing trauma awareness through education and starting the conversation. Thank you again, Erin, for tackling this myth and empowering trauma survivors. What are your thoughts? #traumaawareness #traumadisclosure #ptsd #ptsdawareness #traumarecovery #ptsdrecovery #evidencebased #evidencebasedpractice #traumaempowered
“You’ll retraumatize someone if you ask them about their trauma.” It’s wild to me how widespread this myth is. Of course, trauma should always be assessed in the context of patient consent. It should be done with great sensitivity. And there should always be an explicit option for patients to skip any questions that they don’t wish to answer. They are in control. But these conditions should basically always be met in a therapy relationship. The massive harm done by this myth drives me in my work every day.

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." - Peter A. Levine. This quote by Peter A. Levine, a prominent figure in the field of trauma therapy, captures the hopeful perspective that while trauma may be an unavoidable aspect of human experience, it doesn't have to define or control one's life indefinitely. Read our latest blog here as we unravel the transformative power of TF-CBT, shining a light on its potential to guide individuals from the depths of despair to the possibility of renewal and resilience. https://lnkd.in/e7CGZp-W

At the moment of trauma, we’re rendered powerless. This often leads to an instinctive freeze response (the ‘red zone’). The only option open to the traumatised brain at that point then is rescue from the outside: hoping that either the ‘predator’ leaves us alone, or that someone comes in to rescue us. It makes perfect sense that this happens at the moment of trauma. But it also plays out years later in the therapy setting, and especially in the therapeutic relationship: when we’re triggered into powerlessness and freeze by the therapist themselves.
