Recent cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, and Rock Hill, with South Carolina totaling nine human cases in 2024. While case rates remain consistent with 2023, these new infections have sparked concern among residents. West Nile Virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, affecting humans, birds, and animals. With no specific treatment or vaccine available, most infected individuals show no symptoms. However, severe cases may necessitate hospitalization for specialized care. Symptoms range from fever and headache to severe manifestations like disorientation and paralysis, affecting less than 1% of patients. Stay informed about typical symptoms such as fever, headache, and rash, and seek medical attention if severe symptoms like confusion or seizures arise. Remember, West Nile Virus is a reportable condition in South Carolina. Stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect yourself from mosquito bites during peak transmission season in summer and early fall. #WestNileVirus #PublicHealth #SouthCarolinaSafety

Troublesome Mice in Alberta In Alberta, there are seven species of mice and 12 species of voles. The most troublesome among them are the house mouse, the deer mouse, and the meadow vole. The Health Risks of Mice Infestations Each mouse can produce around 50 to 60 droppings per night and urinate frequently while foraging. Besides being unsanitary, mice droppings and urine can transmit pathogens, diseases, and viruses. Some mice and rats can carry harmful diseases such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), Leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, plague, and typhus. Secondary Infestations from Mice Nests Mice nests attract mites, which may migrate to other parts of your home, creating a secondary infestation.
