Q: Tell us about your career journey at Humanforce and your current role? - I joined Humanforce as a Senior Software Engineer as part of their acquisition of Ento. For the past year I’ve helped maintain the Ento platform in a team of smart, hilarious and cheese-obsessed engineers. - Even though I enjoyed my work, I’m always looking to add more skills to my toolbelt and be exposed to new things and so I couldn’t ignore the exciting opportunity that opened up in our award-winning Analytics team. I’ve always been curious about the Data/AI side of things and the unique opportunities and challenges this domain has. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and all the support I’ve received. There are exciting projects up ahead and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get building! Q: How do you stay motivated and inspired in your role? - I’m incredibly lucky to draw a lot of my inspiration from the super talented, intelligent and lovely people around me, not only in my amazing team but across Humanforce as well. - There is a buzz of Slack messages throughout the day…celebrating new customers and projects, problem solving, announcing exciting features and improvements etc… constantly reminding me that we are all here for one shared purpose, which is to provide a world-class HCM suite with an outstanding user experience both for our customers and their employees. Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in a similar career path? - My number one advice I’d give is to have a ‘Growth Mindset’. Technology is constantly changing and there seems to be a new framework/ cool library announced every other day. It all seems overwhelming and imposter syndrome is rife in this industry. I think it’s important to remember that we are all constantly learning and growing, no matter what stage you are in your career. Be bold, ask questions, make mistakes and keep learning and improving. Also coffee, you’ll need lots and lots of coffee! Q: Outside of work do you have any hobbies or interests? - I’m a homebody and watching Netflix wrapped up in a cozy blanket feels positively w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l. At Neosync, we've built an open source synthetic data platform that processes hundreds of millions of records. Investors are always shocked to learn that our team is just 3 people. We have plenty of money to hire but we purposely keep the team lean. So how are we so efficient? 1. Complete ownership - each one of us owns a feature from beginning to end, across the entire stack. No handoffs or context switching. 2. Trust - we trust each other to make the right product decisions and unless someone wants a review of code, design, etc. we don't force it. 3. Accountability - we do a 10min stand-up at the beginning of the day and 10min stand-down at the end of the day. Quick recap on progress and any blockers. These are the only meetings we do in the week. These values work for us and have allowed us to move incredibly quickly. But different environments work for different people and it's important to align on shared values of how you want to work before you start working together.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗲, # 16: I avoid silos by collaborating across team boundaries At my last job, officially I was on the underwriting team, building tools to support the company's underwriting ops team as we scaled up our business year by year. However, I was soon collaborating with other teams, to the point that on my self-evaluation in my second six-month review, I had to label my list of achievements by team in order for it to make any sense. How did I get into working across team boundaries? Here are a few ways: - When my day-to-day work brought me in contact with code in a different part of our app that needed some TLC, and it was simple enough that it didn't need to be passed off to the team that owned the code, 𝗜 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲, tagging the appropriate engineers to review the PR. A common example was removing dead code that wasn't used anymore. - Sometimes a project in my team required coordination with another team, such as collaborating with the infra team to move some of our background jobs to dedicated infrastructure. - Once, the entire engineering team held put projects on hold for a month-long "Bug Blitz", focusing everyone's efforts on reducing tech debt across the code base. This is where I first started diving into code outside of my team's domain. Breaking out of my team's silo gave me a broader knowledge of the code base, and 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲: as my team built more complex dashboards that brought together data from different domains of the app, I was ready thanks to the cross-domain work I'd already done. #jobsearch #hireme
