Who better to ask about her reflections on a career in the legacy industry, in support of National Careers Week, than IRLA's Leslie-Ann Giovnilli - Facilitator and Mentor. Take a read of her responses when we asked her to share some insight: Give us your top tips on getting into the sector as a career: "I called the chairman of Lloyds and asked for a job, so I'm not sure I'm the best example of how to go about it! What I would say to people now, is that summer jobs and internships all help if you are truly committed to wanting to get an insight into the arena, and such opportunities are advertised on LinkedIn and on member websites." Best and worst career advice you had when trying to make your way into this industry? "Be open to all opportunities – on your terms. Volunteer, don’t be pushed. Stay authentic, do what you are comfortable with, not what you see others doing. As for the worst advice - I was once told don’t bother training or applying for the better roles as you are a female of a certain age!" What would you say to a young person wanting to find out about a career in our arena? "Research. Don’t be held back/fixed by your degree. Legacy offers a huge range of roles and there is so much potential if you're dedicated to making your way in the industry." What do companies in our field need to do to promote career opportunities to young people more? "Improve internal promotions and communications to get current staff really enthused and fired up about getting younger people into the area. It's vital, and really quite simple!" 🌟 "I was top of my class, but I still felt lost." 🌟 My friend Emily had always been an achiever—top of her class and accepted into one of the UK’s top universities. But when it came to securing a spring week or summer internship, 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸. 📚 Despite her academic success, she felt swarmed by the competition, lost in a sea of applications, and uncertain of how to stand out. She spent hours tweaking her CV, rehearsing for interviews, but nothing seemed to click. 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 was the word she used to describe herself. 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱. I gave her a free 1-on-1 mentoring session, we focused on transforming her CV into something that stood out—𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 for the industry.  We worked through 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 that boosted her confidence, helping her feel prepared and in control.  And finally, I connected her with key industry contacts that helped open doors she hadn’t even considered. 🎉 The result? Emily not only gained confidence in herself—she secured a summer internship at Morgan Stanley!! 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁. I am on a mission to make career aid available, accessible and with no cost barriers. That's why I am offering my services of CV enhancement, interview preprepation and career's guidance for 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲. Why are we failing to prepare our students for their future? Data shows that over half of college graduates are considered "underemployed." This means that college graduates are more likely to be working in a job or career that does not require their level of education. Why is that? Some would say that we have too many students going to college. That's not the issue, although the cost for college has made the decision more questionable. Others would say that people are majoring in fields that are less relevant. That could be true. In reality, those who go to college and work or participate in internships within their field are much more likely to be healthily employed in their industry once the graduate. What should K-12 schools do? In short, aiming for all students to graduate and attend college is an admirable goal. However, not every child wants to be an academic. And many who do lack the social skills and real-life work ethic to make them ready for the real world. Ultimately, it is up to parents to help their children to mature and grow. But schools can help a lot too. Here's what I have found that works: 1. Have career or job fair days for your students, whether you are 5 or 18, this can be a lot of fun 2. Partner with local businesses for summer internships, especially for HS students 3. Invest in developing the whole child, this includes SEL, civics, and executive functioning learning 4. Understand our limitations, we can only do so much, but we can provide exposure to the real world by having projects, team work, and oral assessments to beyond just paper tests and writing 5. Provide trade and skill development, even from an early age Be creative, look at what others are doing, and really invest in your students. After all, only a small percentage will actually go off to college, graduate, and work in a field and career that is appropriate for their level of education. Article link: https://lnkd.in/eUgNkWjn

Hey Summer interns, did you know each day is an assessment? “An Assessment?” Don’t worry it’s not just an assessment on you You ALSO get to assess: -      Make sure you get staffed on projects and get REAL experience -      Ask senior leaders for career advice and to sit in on meetings -      Chat with junior colleagues about their experience -      Learn one (if not 10) things everyday Remember when you get your full time offer, YOU get to decide to return. Make sure you get a fruitful experience so it’s an easy decision to accept. Assessments go both ways YOU get to decide how to spend your years out of school

As we cruise into summer 🏖, it is a good time for you to start thinking about what you may want to accomplish in the school year and semester ahead. Did you know that many recruiters are already using LinkedIn and other resources to source talent for the fall? Here are the steps you can take over the summer to be ready to apply as you see those jobs and internship postings go live in the coming months: 1. ✅ Review your resume to ensure it is up to date, meets industry standards and aligns with your employment goals. 2. ✅Depending on your desired industry, decide if putting together a portfolio makes sense for you. If you aren’t sure, get with your faculty in your program to discuss if you should have a working portfolio and what that could look like.  3. ✅ Do some research on local companies that interest you. Read their “About” section and browse through their “Careers” page to get a sense of the type of opportunities they may offer.   Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. The JCCC Career Development Center is here to assist you every step of the way. Reach out to us at 👉 careerdevelopment@jccc.edu 👈 if you would like assistance in putting together your professional materials.
