Disruptive Change Is Hitting Leaders & Managers Hardest To say the modern workplace is evolving is an understatement. I often joke, when I encounter a technical issue on a Zoom or Teams call, that "they didn't teach me this in college." There is truth to my quip, because most of us are self-taught on these technologies, picking things up as we go along in our workplaces. The pandemic helped accelerate this change to using video communications, and sometimes it still feels like we're catching up. Enterprise change of any kind is disruptive and the change we've experienced since 2020 is a monumental shift. Using video communications is but one example of many changes that have transpired in that time, and leaders are feeling the brunt. As Heather Barrett and Andy Kemp of Gallup articulate in this informative article, change is often a time for opportunity. And it starts with trust and communication, which support employee engagement and resilience. https://lnkd.in/gSRMDs_T #gallup #hrstrategy #leaderinsights #changemanagement #leadershiptrust #communication #hr #brighttalent

An interesting article from Gallup highlights that in the current business landscape, leaders and managers are more likely to experience extensive disruptive change than individual contributors. In our previous post, we discussed how leaders and managers are crucial to employee engagement that drives the success of the organisation. Yet, with leaders and managers feeling increasing pressure, they are also more likely to feel disengaged at work themselves. So, what does this mean for their teams and the organisation overall? Change can create a sense of lost control, and the strain placed on individuals and interpersonal relationships can significantly impact employee engagement and workplace culture. It's crucial to ask if companies are providing the necessary support to ensure that leaders and managers are equipped in this context to foster workplace engagement and ensure people are ‘change ready.’ As the article highlights, trust, communication, and a focus on future goals are essential. From our perspective, doing this well requires that companies continue to invest in support mechanisms for managers and leaders during these demanding times when skills and behaviours are put to the test. Development levers such as coaching and training can help managers and leaders navigate change more effectively, allowing them to better build a culture that fosters flexibility, motivation, well-being, and growth in times of change, where their enduring strength, resilience, and optimism can inspire and motivate the entire organisation. Navigating the New Normal: Adapting Leadership Strategies for the Workplace of 2024 💼 In an era of unprecedented change, the workplace of 2024 demands a radical reimagining of leadership and management strategies. The Gallup report on workplace trends for 2024 illuminates the path forward, emphasizing the critical need for leaders to adapt to the rapidly evolving employee expectations and organizational structures. 📱Hybrid work models have become the new norm, fundamentally altering where and how we work. This transition isn't just about logistics; it's a complete redefinition of the employee-employer relationship. The challenge for leaders is to maintain engagement and productivity amidst this flexibility, ensuring that the benefits of hybrid work are fully realized. 📝 Additionally, the report highlights an unsettling trend: the expansion of job responsibilities without a corresponding increase in support or compensation. This development places undue stress on employees, risking burnout and disengagement. Effective leadership will require a delicate balance between leveraging employee potential and ensuring their well-being. 🏢 Organizational restructuring and budget cuts have further complicated the landscape. While these measures are often necessary for growth or survival, they can leave employees feeling uncertain and undervalued. Leaders must navigate these changes with transparency and empathy, fostering a culture of trust and resilience. 🔍 In the face of these challenges, the ultimate goal remains clear: to create a workplace that not only survives but thrives. This will demand innovative management strategies that prioritize people, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. #WorkplaceTrends #HybridWork #ProfessionalDevelopment #EmployeeWellbeing

Micromanagement in corporate culture can have several negative impacts.........✍️✍️ 1. Decreased Employee Morale - Constant oversight can lead to feelings of mistrust and dissatisfaction among employees, lowering morale and engagement. 2. Reduced Productivity - Employees might spend more time seeking approvals and providing updates rather than focusing on their core tasks, reducing overall productivity. 3. Stifled Creativity and Innovation - Micromanagement discourages employees from taking initiative or thinking creatively, as they may fear making mistakes or deviating from prescribed methods. 4. High Turnover Rates - Employees who feel undervalued and over-controlled are more likely to seek opportunities elsewhere, leading to higher turnover rates and increased recruitment and training costs. 5. Stress and Burnout - Constant scrutiny can lead to heightened stress levels and burnout, negatively impacting employees' health and well-being. 6. Erosion of Trust - Micromanagement can erode trust between managers and their teams, damaging working relationships and reducing overall team cohesion. In the long run, a culture of micromanagement can stifle organizational growth and innovation, making it difficult to attract and retain top talent. #WorkCulture #Leadership #EmployeeEngagement #Innovation #TalentRetention

The trouble with transparency is it creates unrest within an organization. It's easy to dip one's toe in the water, but too many companies pull back with the initial reaction as employees struggle to know how to respond. Becoming a more transparent organization is not a switch you flip on one day and expect everyone to jump for joy. It’s a culture change and, like all culture changes, there are good days and bad days. It requires long-term commitment. One thing is certain- companies who successfully transition to a more transparent culture have better change resilience and higher employee satisfaction. Those who try and fail create a culture of distrust and are frequently in a worse position than when they started. Launching a culture of transparency is worth the effort but requires committed leaders, superior change management, rigorous talent development, and lots of patience. #transparency #communication #employeeengagement #employeeexperience
