Here’s a story about performance management – shortly after I joined a company as part of a broader HR leadership change, I helped manage the performance review process for the client groups I had responsibility for. It was prior to implementing a performance management system and we handled the process with paper documents (old school for sure). As I collected the forms from a few managers from a particular function to submit to our team to process, I noticed the answers were identical. I went to one of the managers whom I had a trusted relationship with and asked about it. He laughed and confirmed that he and the fellow managers repurposed the same forms each year because no one did anything with them after they were collected. So, they figured if no one else cared, why should they waste their time. I was amused and surprised as I had not experienced this before…a complete disregard toward the annual review process. It left an impression on me. We did improve performance management practices at the company, however, the lingering hangover of prior discontent did impact the overall buy-in. Fast forward and in the spirit of what I know now versus then, I wish I could go back in time and do more. But I can’t; but what I can do is help other HR leaders build more robust performance management practices. The time has never been better to rebuild, and we have the experts to help. The start of a new year is a time to look back at what has gone before and plan ahead for what is to come and that often gets employers thinking about annual appraisals. Annual appraisals have a poor reputation in some quarters so here are our top do’s and don’ts for getting them right. Do ✔ Make sure that the annual meeting is part of a wider performance management cycle ✔Allow for the giving and receiving of feedback, it’s a two way process ✔ Recognise achievements ✔ Set SMART objectives ✔ Discuss employee development and the support available from the company ✔ Use technology when appropriate to assist the process Don’t ❌ Meet once a year and never have any discussions in between about performance ❌ Make the employee feel like the process is something they have no input into ❌ Just focus on any negatives ❌ Set unrealistic expectations and objectives with no support to help the employee, you’re just setting them up to fail ❌ Apply a one size fits all approach If you want to discuss your performance management process and how to move it forward and make sure it is fit for purpose then get in touch. #performancemanagement #annualappraisal #appraisal #hr #hrservices #hrconsulting #sme #sbs #cubehr
