We are thrilled to address one of the most pressing issues facing our #Hispanic and #LatinoAmerican #community: employment. Despite being well-prepared, highly educated, and possessing extensive experience, many in our community struggle with understanding how the system works. This lack of knowledge often hinders their ability to fully integrate into the workforce. To ensure our community can succeed, it’s crucial to become familiar with the new system. This involves learning a new #language, validating #studies, and, in some cases, completing a #GED. Adapting to the United States system requires effort and commitment, but with the right support, it’s entirely possible. To address the challenges faced by immigrants in securing meaningful employment, we have launched a #challenge aimed at helping them achieve their goals in just 2 months, with the commitment to accelerate the process and enhance the capabilities of our community members. All these efforts will culminate in a #laborFair called: LA #VILLALATINA DE LA #EMPLEABILIDAD, the #Latin #Village of #Employability. This event will take place on July 21, 2024, inside the #Queens #museum, and we invite everyone who wants to be part of this transformative process to join us as a sponsor, with a conection for a job offers or as a guest in this space that belongs to everyone. Our community is full of talented, hardworking individuals who are ready to contribute to the workforce at a higher level. #Latinos are known for their strong work, and we are eager to integrate into the #workforce of the #UnitedStates. This year, The Refugees and Immigrants Organization orchestrated two remarkably successful events. One was tailored for Finance and Marketing professionals, while the other zeroed in on experts from the Humanities and Social Sciences realm. We are tremendously proud of the connections we've fostered, transcending the confines of mere events. We aim to facilitate learning for students, drawing insights from the experiences of refugees, immigrants, individuals of color, and those with disabilities. We want them to understand that the challenges they face today are likely akin to what others have conquered before, emerging victorious. Dilan U. shared invaluable lessons from her journey as a refugee striving to penetrate the sphere of sustainability and urban planning. Her career trajectory has propelled her into realms that only a select few can attain. Ousama Alkhatib recounted how his identity as a Syrian Refugee led to the denial of opportunities, prompting him to forge his own path. He underscored the pivotal role of partnerships and collaborations as the initial stride in any professional venture. Tania Ruiz-Chapman shed light on the instances where her disability caused her to be overlooked for roles she was fully qualified for. She emphasized the significance of engaging with non-profit sectors and illustrated how steadfast determination can shatter glass ceilings. Moreover, we delved into essential keywords for job hunting as consultants, strategies for addressing superiors who belittle your efforts with remarks like "be grateful for the opportunity," effective approaches to garner community support for independent projects, and the ongoing relevance of unpaid internships at prestigious organizations such as The United Nations. #Refugees #Immigrants #Canada #Employement #UniversityofToronto #UTSC

It’s been 3 weeks since going from dog mom to host mom. It went so fast! Everyday is a new adventure. I’ve relearned a school schedule, gotten up to date on how schools operate now (I’m still in shock she has no locker and no heavy textbooks), and started diving in for all the senior things coming up. Before we know it these 8 months will be gone, she will be graduated and headed back for her next chapter. We do finally have a schedule down fairly well. But every day is still surrounded with some uncertainty. There’s so much I don’t know. I don’t like to no know things - it makes me anxious. I like a plan and to know all the details and I’m realizing that’s not in the realm of possibilities when in parent mode. Even more so with a language barrier. These conversations always start and end with a lot of laughter and what probably sounds frustrating to some has become my favorite part of the day. Our struggle bonds us and makes both of us better. What Advice Would You Give to Your 16 yr Old Self? I’m somewhat horrified to realise that it’s 40 years since I left school. At 16, I left St. George’s, Middlesbrough with nine O-levels and no clear direction for my future. Career advice was almost nonexistent I felt lost and unaware of my strengths or the opportunities available to me. I’m lucky - I’ve had incredible opportunities, role models and support from family and friends. And I’m grateful, of course, but sometimes wonder what could have been, with earlier guidance and mentorship.. Too much talent remains unrealised, and many young people continue to lack hope and goals. We all have a responsibility to support aspiration and ambition and show them what’s possible and how to achieve it. Please get involved if you can. Today was the last day of school before summer break. I have had a challenging year of growth and change. In the last 5 years I have gone from lecturer and adjunct at universities and a community college, to tenured professor and department head at a community college. I moved to Switzerland in September 2023 after a lifetime of dreaming about such a move, and after a year of serious introspection. When I quit the first stable and well-paying job I have ever had, a dream job really, to move to Switzerland to be closer to family, there were no guarantees. PhDs are not sought after here in Switzerland like they are in the US. The education here prepares you for a career and doesn't typcially route you through universities and colleges. I did not grow up in the Swiss system so I am often not "legible" to those hiring. And yet, before I landed in Zürich I somehow had a job being a principal at an international elementary school. It felt like pure chance that my resume was noticed on a FB expat page. The owners reached out to me, looked over my CV, interviewed me, and offered me a job. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would work in administration at an elementary school. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the college classroom. I do. I miss teaching every day. I miss being around young adults, and returning and non-traditional students. I miss my field Communication Studies. But I love being around the little ones and I love actively applying the knowledge of my field to my job. I am also learning new skills that are required in elementary education, things like timetabling, risk management, delegation, overseeing school wide activities, implementing new programing, and interpreting mandates from local authorities, to name a few. Next year there will be new goals, top of mind are staff and teacher development and digging into policies and procedures. This first year was about getting my feet on the ground and initiating strategies that would enhance internal and external communication. It was about getting to know the teachers and the staff, and about learning the school's history. We are truely birds of a feather. Westside Works is a workforce development center located in Atlanta, Georgia, dedicated to improving economic mobility for residents of Atlanta's #Westside and the broader metro area. Managed by #CareerRise, Westside Works offers a variety of training programs, career services, and community resources aimed at providing education and #employment opportunities. The center focuses on high-demand #career pathways, including culinary arts, information #technology, #healthcare, and skilled trades. It offers programs in partnership with organizations like #ConstructionReady, #LevyRestaurants, #PerScholas, and The #TrainingExpo. These partnerships help provide participants with the necessary skills and certifications to pursue successful careers. Westside Works also features a Digital Learning Lab, created in collaboration with #Comcast and #Microsoft, to enhance participants' technical skills and #digitalliteracy. The center's mission is supported by an Advisory Council composed of professionals from various sectors, including #education, #urbanplanning, #communitydevelopment, and local businesses, who contribute their expertise to ensure the effectiveness of its programs.
