I am so proud of our Basic Needs team at California State University, Long Beach! We wrapped up our academic year breaking bread (pancakes?) and enjoying each other's company. Basic needs work itself is hard, but not hard to do at CSULB. While we are exhausted and hurting for all the students we meet with experiencing homelessness/unsafe homes, hunger, and other crisis, we are so honored to be trusted in these delicate spaces, and grateful to have resources available that offer swift, tangible interventions to keep them in school. We have a caring campus that fully supports us and widely shares our resources with students. I'm so proud of my team for: Their creativity in both Outreach and Case Management services. Their collaborative spirit that cultivates a strong ecosystem across campus. Their natural interest in understanding policies and seeing opportunities to make systemic changes. Hiring and developing an exceptional team of student assistants that significantly expand our reach. Bridging research and practice, and informing research by picking up on student trends and patterns that end up becoming the focus of developing basic needs research (caregivers, student parents, undocumented students, international students, financial literacy). For staying up to date with trainings, competency building, and scholarly work. Their reflection, self-work, maintaining healthy boundaries and ethics and being natural leaders. For being kind to each other, understanding, flexible, and keeping each other accountable to the high standards our students deserve. After seeing over 1,100 students for crisis services and over 14,000 students for food resources outreach, providing 2,000+ nights of emergency housing, 7,000 meal swipes, $700K+ of emergency grants, and expanding our collaboration portfolio to contract with three community based organizations that directly house students for us, this team deserves all the rest, self-care and re-charging they need as we prepare for the 24-25 year. Resilience in the Shadows: Empowering Unaccompanied Minors Through Education In our communities, unaccompanied minors from other countries are navigating life with incredible bravery and resilience. Without the support of family systems, these young people are balancing full-time work and the challenges of a new country—all while striving for a better future through education. These kids are not just surviving; they’re showing us what it means to be truly resilient and determined. But they need our support. Traditional school schedules and programs don’t fit with their demanding lives. To truly support them, we must create schools with flexible schedules and tailored instruction that recognize their unique circumstances. It’s time we honor their hard work and courage by building educational systems that meet their needs. When we support these young people, we’re not just helping them—we’re strengthening our entire community. Let’s take action to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn and succeed, no matter the obstacles they face.
