Simulation revealing wind effects of the foiling America's Cup boats that can sail at nearly 4 times the wind speed. The wind shadow they cast is very different from traditional sailing and greatly influences their racing tactics. Especially during the starting manoeuvres, the windward boat reaching down to cover its opponent can cause the leeward boat to fall off its foils, touchdown, and a disaster, ruining the whole race. Another situation where the dirty air appears to play a significant role is when approaching the boundaries and tacking: When tacking, the circulation around the sails switches direction, and a (starting) vortex is shed, often causing trouble for the boat closer to the boundary and ending up as the windward boat. #sailing #aerodynamics #simulation #dassaultsystèmes #xflow
