Welcome to this weeks top news highlights from the commercial energy sector.
️⃣ Chiltern Vital Berkeley Ltd (CVB) has bought the 40-acre Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park at Berkeley with a plan to turn it into a key site for nuclear research, education and artificial intelligence (AI). The Berkeley site, known for being one of the first civil nuclear power stations, will now focus on developing small modular and micro reactor technology. CVB will work with the UK Government, international energy firms, academic institutions, and AI companies to develop the site. The acquisition follows Great British Nuclear’s purchase of the nearby Oldbury nuclear site. The project will also address the need for nuclear-trained workers, with plans to offer education and training at the site. CVB will partner with Rolls-Royce SMR, the University of Bristol and local colleges to create training facilities and support job creation. 🇬🇧☢️
️⃣ The UK’s oil industry has had a tough few years. The future does not promise a change in a positive direction, either. It seems all hope for this has been lost, and some oil drillers are looking at other jurisdictions for their future survival. This is certainly the case for Serica Energy, one of the biggest suppliers of oil and gas to the UK, operating fields in the North Sea. Once upon a time, the North Sea was one of the biggest oil- and gas-producing regions in the world. Serica Energy chairman David Latin recently dropped what should have been a giant bomb for any government concerned with energy security. “The UK is now fiscally more unstable than almost anywhere else on the planet,” he said, as quoted by the Telegraph. “That means we are looking for new places to invest our money. And Norway is a place where potentially we could recreate our business model.” 🛢️📉
️⃣ EDF Renewables UK is set to introduce over 300MW of battery storage to the UK’s energy grid within the next 12 months. The company is working on six projects, including installations in Braintree, Essex and Indian Queens Saint Austell, as well as recently energised facilities in Sundon and approvals for a site in Dorset. The new battery storage will provide enough power for more than 400,000 homes for two hours. 🔋🏠
️⃣ Almost 60% of the public support the government‘s policy of approving new solar farms. The survey, conducted by YouGov for the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), also shows that 68% are in favour of the ‘Great British Energy‘ initiative and 60% back lifting the ban on onshore wind. However, the proposal to remove the winter fuel allowance for some pensioners faces opposition, with 59% of respondents against this change. The poll highlights that many people view increasing UK energy independence as a primary goal for the government’s clean energy policies. ☀️⚡️
