Having worked in #compliance for the Commonwealth, where there was genuine attention to patient safety, I was shocked to learn how many medical boards are run to protect the most powerful, not protect patients or staff being harassed or assaulted. Even in MA, it is not always a rosy picture in every institution.
I had not before understood why people were so cynical. I was shocked to learn people perceived disciplinary actions as retaliatory. Then I learned that some of the worst criminals are given a free pass or mere slap on the wrist https://lnkd.in/gx6whUbY while others are falsely accused for over politics or power games. Example of when the Texas board was sued for misconduct. https://lnkd.in/dG_aj-F
The medical profession can only regain trust if we have #accountabilty and maintain standards. The “old boy network” of protecting your golf club buddy needs to go and be replaced with #ethics, #integrity, and #safetyculture.
How does one safely practice #medicine and center patients amid all this? I kept going up the ladder each time I saw things that were unsafe, unfair, harmful, mistakenly thinking that if I got high enough, I could be in charge of #safety and do the right things. I was naive to the fact the higher you go - in my case up to Chief Medical Officer - the more you are around power hungry types, not those driven by or committed to service to the least powerful. Counterintuitively, “non-profit” is the least safe space. Some donors, perhaps those who used to visit Epstein’s island, seem to think the people in a non-profit are for sale and part of the benefits and perks. https://lnkd.in/gi8wjyBX.
I describe all this as “gladiator games of the c-suite.” You can’t bring rainbows to a knife fight, I’ve learned. It’s one of many reasons I went to get an MBA, to at least have better control via the budget.
I pivoted from non-profit, of always begging for money (for those poor suffering souls) to for-profit to rebrand away from “good girl” (easy target) do-gooder to being a hard nosed business woman. I see it as that song in Wicked where she gives up the plum role to serve the Wizard, a cushy job but one where the price is to stay silent on harm, to leave and go off on your own, a harder path, but one where you live by your own values. https://lnkd.in/guUYf7W7 The “Good Witch” in “Wicked” is the one who fits expectations, serves power, maintains status quo. Is that really “good”?
I also am creating a #culture from scratch. Let’s see if I can create a venture with the right team and culture and skill sets to deliver.

I met with a Minnesota Senator’s staff, about four years ago to discuss medical boards. We see discipline for women seeking care for depression, all while sexual misconduct goes unchecked. I had proposed to Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) a project to work on this issue, along with burnout, and board oversight. My question, who is going to take action in healthcare? We have dangerous people who are allowed to practice, all while someone with postpartum depression is treated like a criminal for seeking care.
But, if we can allow a man with history of assault, to run for president, I guess it doesn’t matter if 4/5 doctors found guilty are still allowed to practice. Maybe it doesn’t even matter to anyone… Maybe it matters so little we shouldn’t even report it. At least that’s the message victims are receiving.
“Some states are apparently more forgiving than others when disciplining doctors in sexual misconduct cases. Georgia and Kansas, for example, allowed two of every three doctors publicly disciplined for sexual misconduct to return to practice, orders on board websites show. In Alabama, it was nearly three out of every four. In Minnesota, it was four of every five.” (Article in comments)

Have you ever gone to a medical provider with serious medical concerns, only to be told you are being “dramatic” or “overreacting” or it is “just anxiety?” In the ever-changing world of healthcare, patients often find themselves at the mercy of medical professionals for their well-being. However, amidst the complexities of diagnosis and treatment, there is a sinister phenomenon called, “medical gaslighting.” This subtle form of psychological manipulation can have devastating effects on patients including eroding trust and impeding proper care.
