I will be presenting at Computers in Libraries 2024 on why academic libraries should teach more than just the databases. (Wednesday, March 13 at 3:30PM) Academic librarians are often called to provide library orientation, aka, “teach the databases.” While important, these sessions are far from the only thing we can provide. In this session, I'll showcase why academic libraries need to broaden their reach. This can include providing webinars and workshops on transferable skills covering subjects such as navigating information, career development, and personal archiving. I'll highlight how getting out of our traditional lanes can enhance student skills, promote lifelong learning, and strengthen the role of the library within the community. Register with my speaker code (24SPKR) for $100 off early-bird rates.

With summer officially here, the need to find comfortable indoor escapes and activities is pressing. Libraries, far from mere storehouses of books, serve as essential hubs of learning, growth, and accessibility. They offer a wide array of services beyond traditional print materials, including e-books, online databases, technology classes, and assistive tools. They strive to bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone has access to information and opportunities for personal development. Moreover, libraries provide a unique communal space where people from all walks of life can gather, learn, and engage with one another. They level the playing field for access to knowledge and resources, empowering individuals to pursue their passions, acquire new skills, and explore ideas they might otherwise never encounter. So, as you plan your summer activities and seek out those much-needed escapes, take notice of the gem that is your local library. Whether you're seeking a quiet place to work, a fun workshop to attend, or simply a new perspective to explore, libraries have something to offer everyone. 📍 Apex High School / 📸 Mark Herboth

As families become more conscious of junk fees, UC steps up. For a week, at least. First generation students are often surprised by other mandatory non-tuition fees that can include technology fees, recreationally facility fees graduation fees (even more ludicrous when a school "requires" students to participate in graduation) transcript fees, registration fees, overload fees, lab fees and more. Most of these are not covered by scholarship or financial aid. While other industries are currently drawing regulatory ire for junk fees, or hidden expenses, the nonprofit status of most institutions of higher education should give the implementers of these surprise fees (and their regulators) some pause. In the meantime, ask about non-tuition fees when considering a school. The variance from one to another can be significant.
