As we look back at our #AirportArchive to mark our centenary, we uncovered a piece of history that shows just how far we've come. On this day 100 years ago, a simple newspaper advertisement in the Daily Standard sought a single Groundsman for Brisbane Airport. Today, our dedicated team of grounds contractors maintain a sprawling 2,700-hectare precinct – that's 75 times larger than our original 36-hectare plot! It's a powerful reminder of how we've grown alongside our city, from modest agricultural land to a vital hub connecting our region to the rest of Australia and beyond. Flying this route out of #London is a great opportunity to study the very first part of our route for GB Row Challenge: the #RiverThames and #ThamesEstuary! 🕙 Setting off from Tower Bridge at the top of the tide, we'll have six hours to get as far as we can on the evening of 9th June before the tide turns against us, probably somewhere around Tilbury after we pass under the #M25 at the QE2 Bridge. As it'll be #springtides, and the adverse tide will run faster than we can row, we'll probably need to find a spot at the edge of the river to #anchor up ⚓️ for a few hours around here. While most the focus is on challenges we'll face at #sea, just *getting there* carries significant risks - especially when you're facing backwards. There are jetties and pontoons that stick out into the river, huge metal mooring #buoys, lots of traffic that graduates fast from city boats and river taxis to #containerships coming in and out of Tilbury or London Gateway ports. We need to be absolutely prepared and alert during this section: 🧭 Making sure we're in the right part of the river 👀 Keeping a lookout at all times for #vessels, objects and infrastructure in the water 📢 Listening to the correct VHF #radio channels in each segment of the river so we can respond quickly to instructions ⚠️ Being aware of shallow areas as the water drops towards #lowtide and #darkness sets in for that first night🌙. #routeplanning #navigation #expedition #adventure #oceanrowing #GBrowchallenge #seachangerow #planning #aerialview #shipping #navigatingthethames #day1 Port of London Authority Kat Bruce Aoife Luscombe Laura Fantuzzi Lorena Nichols Chrissy Durkin Jess Mc Iver

June is #NationalGreatOutdoorsMonth, and Florida has no shortage of scenic locales to explore. Did you know that the way to get there can be scenic as well? The Florida Scenic Highways Program boasts 27 designated scenic byways and counting across the state. Managed by the Florida Department of Transportation, the program focuses on intrinsic values that get travelers off the major highways and into local communities. “Modern“ Airships? Seeing that Flying Whales DOESN'T EVEN KNOW where to put their tail fins does NOT inspire confidence. That's aerodynamically as studied and clarified by Naatz in 1924 and yes, now available for free online. And that is structurally as any good engineer can tell you - the torsional resistance of a structure goes up as the enclosed AREA of the structure, meaning those tail fins are much more prone to failure than necessary. And, there's the MYTH that large airships need fully rigid structures. That was necessary 100 years ago due to the limited strength and durability of natural fibers. NOT NOW. A much simpler semi rigid structure would do fine.
FLYING WHALES was in Mount Isa City (Queensland, Australia) last week to sign a strategic agreement with its Mayor Peta MacRae. It aims at establishing the first operational base for its LCA60T large capacity airships in Australia 🌏 As part of the development of its business model and to serve its Australian customers, FLYING WHALES will establish 6 operational bases in Australia. This first base in Queensland is set to be developed by 2028. Our collaboration will kick off immediately with a comprehensive technical feasibility study and business case. It will be a game-changer in Queensland and the Northern Territories regarding its strong needs for logistics, cargo transportation for industrial or construction projects in remote areas and disaster relief.
