🔍 We are delighted to announce the release of our Standards Expert Working Group’s Future Capability Paper (FCP). The paper looks to establish where and how the UK can play a greater role in telecoms standards development and details some critical telecommunications areas where standards can and have had a major impact 🚀 There’s an exploration of the outputs of the Expert Working Group so far, as well as a number of future recommendations including: ✔️ Increasing standards education and skills in particular for SMEs and Academia ✔️ Encouraging UK Government to help set future standards direction ✔️Addressing the future of Standards Essential Patents ✔️Encouraging greater interoperability to help supplier diversification To find out more about these outputs and recommendations please do have a read of the paper and share your thoughts💡 #telecoms #innovation #standards Mark Grayson, Chandrika Worrall, PhD, Jani-Pekka Kainulainen, John Grant, François Ortolan, Rehman (Rem) Noormohamed, Jussi Kahtava, David Vargas, Mohammed Al-Imari, Andrew Smith, David Rogers MBE, Simon Fletcher, Howard Benn FITP, FIET, Nick Ireland, Luis Lopes, Kevin Holley & Kevin Lees. A very comprehensive assessment and good read (so far...I'm still working through it). Some particularly good observations on SMEs and IP - of course, SEPs in telecoms standards can be a key goal, but all IP should be viewed in the context of a complete business plan - whether they are essential patents, implementation (non-essential) patents or trade secrets.
Great work! Unfortunate that I could not participate until the finish.

2moRegarding the recommendations, for information there are already several interactions with UK Academia on providing awareness on standards. For example, Jani-Pekka Kainulainen and I mentor students at the University of Cambridge alongside Albert Guillen i Fabregas, whereby Matthew Baker also provides a guest lecture on the importance of standards also. I believe Waseem Ozan also does similar but with UCL. There is also a strong drive to improve standardisation for underwater communications led by the UK (slight tangent to 3GPP admittedly) with strong input and leadership from Jonathan Davies, Jeff Neasham, and Paul Mitchell and similarly for LiFi (802.11bb) by Wasiu Popoola, Harald Haas, and Nikola Serafimovski. And of course let's not forget the spin-outs from the University of Southampton based upon AccelerComm Ltds engagement in 3GPP, from Prof Rob Maunder and team. The UK communications standards system is indeed linked up across academia and industry if we dig a bit, however admittedly this might not be obvious and is more based on individual relationships. Interesting read!
