Home energy champions, dedicated outreach advisors and support for community owned renewables are part of a three-year National Lottery funded project that aims to create a thriving ecosystem of community-led action on energy across Bath and North East Somerset. Bath & North East Somerset Council partnered with Bath & West Community Energy, University of Bath and the Community Wellbeing Hub (BANES) to successfully bid for £1.5m funding from The National Lottery Climate Action Fund. The funding will support the creation of a network of Energy Champions, based within community groups, frontline services and third sector and health organisations across B&NES. They will be supporting peers, neighbours, communities and colleagues to access support around home energy, retrofit and renewables through a programme of local advice drop-ins and events and home visits providing basic draughtproofing and energy efficiency measures. On December 12, 2024, over 2,000 eligible community members from the Malango and Bahomea regions cast their ballots in the Community Benefits Sharing (CBS) Fund election in Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. The election marked the formation of a Board of Trustees (BoT) and Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for the Bahomea and Malango Community Benefit Sharing Trust Association, signifying a positive move towards an inclusive and fair benefit-sharing program for Tina River Hydropower Development catchment communities. The CBS Fund aims to provide collective, non-cash benefits to core landowners and the wider project host communities, promoting sustainable development and enhancing socio-economic conditions. With financing from the The World Bank, the second phase of the Community Benefits Sharing Project will support the Tina River Hydropower Development Project and deliver improved infrastructure and services to local communities. The newly established Board of Trustees consists of five members, including representatives from Bahomea and Malango wards, and a representative from @Tina Hydropower Limited (THL). The Community Advisory Committee, consisting of fourteen members, was also elected to represent both regions equally. This historic day for the Community Benefits Sharing Fund highlighted the importance of community involvement and the commitment to gender and regional equity. It stands to set a positive precedent for future benefit sharing programs - both in the Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific region. 🇸🇧 https://bit.ly/4gAlSNg

Heddiw / today - Ynni Cymunedol Cymru / Community Energy Wales went to the Senedd Farchnad, where we talked to MSs about the barriers to expanding community energy & how they can help. We’ll also share what we are asking of election candidates. The three measures we ask candidates to support could transform Welsh communities. If we are to create thousands of new community projects in Wales, local trading is a must. It is also essential in making sure the energy transition we have to make is just. Finance is needed for new projects. We want to the benefits of community energy & its democratising power to be felt by as many people as possible. We can achieve this with a community wealth fund that supports everyone to invest in community energy. Our third measure is for public bodies to set targets, rising each year, for the procurement of energy from local or community sources. This would cut bills for the public sector, build resilience & provide a stream of income & work for community energy. Taken together, these three measures will enable people to purchase their energy cheaper from local generation, improve energy resilience & help to build an income generating asset base for communities, to tackle fuel poverty & improve the environment. Win win win! You can read more about all of this here: https://lnkd.in/e-PmqMSE Become one of our thousands of community energy champions, putting the case for community energy and supporting our expansion by signing up to our Rhan Ni movement here: https://lnkd.in/ePB8u_Be
