A couple weeks ago, re:Bloom hosted "Business is Blooming: A Small Business Resource Fair" a one-stop-shop for businesses to learn about the resources available to them in the Pittsburgh Community. We sold 100 tickets to attendees from 11 communities in the area. As a small business owner just starting out, finding the right resources can be really overwhelming. The idea of this event was to showcase how important it is to think about certain questions when starting a business. For example, when I mentioned the importance of having a budget to build a website, anyone who didn't have one could immediately talk to an accountant or a small business advisor on how to create one. I was so nervous leading up to the event but I'd have to say that this event was a success!  83% of attendees were likely to recommend the event to their friends and 91.7% of attendees found the networking portion to be the most valuable. Of course, I have to thank the people who made this event possible... Did we get it wrong...? This year we set up Small Business Heroes to give tiny but powerful businesses their own awards. It seemed it's a group that doesn't get many chances, usually with just one award at most events, which is aimed at micro businesses. We're excited to have our fabulous venue and sponsors onboard. I'm a big fan of in-person meetings. And find conferences a good way to have 5, 10, 15 meetings. Given, I'm headed to SaaSOpen - March 28th, 2024 Austin Texas in two weeks. Thought I share my 5 learnings to making the most out of conferences: 1) Learned from Caya it's best to attend with a handful of team members which is why I'm excited to be going with Karel 2) Learned from 🦈Todd that one of the best ways to spark a conversation with someone is to give them a genuine compliment.... 3) Learned from Katy that it's important to have a quick and fun elevator pitch. In her words -- before you answer the initial “what do you guys do?” Keep it light as she often starts with “we keep your CEO out of jail” (given Paddle takes care of all sales tax compliance and risk, internationally). 4) I'm a visual learners so I take lots of photos. Of both presentations and with with folks as it helps me to remember the context of what was discussed and makes it a fun way to do follow up. 5) Host an awesome side event and invite all the cool people you know.
