Do you know what MARPOL is? 🤓 It’s the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships. Adopted in 1973 by the International Maritime Organization, it’s the main international convention focusing on the prevention of pollution of the marine environment by vessels. Just as SOLAS sets out the minimum standards for safety at sea, MARPOL does the same for environmental protection. The convention consists of six annexes to ensure the marine environment is protected from pollution and toxic substances. It lays out the requirements for stowing, handling, shipping, and transferring hazardous waste. Enforcement by local authorities is key to preventing environmental pollution – here's how this can improve in Ireland 🌲💧 The EPA has published a report on the environmental enforcement performance of local authorities (County and City Councils) in 2023. The report asks the question: How are we doing at a local level when it comes to enforcing our environmental laws in the areas of water, waste, air and noise? Here are some key takeaways: 🗑️Enforcement of waste activities delivered improvements and positive environmental outcomes, such as the detection and cessation of illegal waste activities. ❌Local authorities did not prioritise enforcement in the areas of water, air and noise in 2023, with poor inspection rates and follow up actions. 🐄Farm inspection rates are far below the level required to drive compliance and improve water quality. 🔥Local authorities need to ensure that only approved solid fuels (for example low-smoke coal and dry wood) are available for sale, to protect public health from harmful air pollutants. NGO scoreboard reveals that EPP has been more ambitious on pollution than on other green files in the European Parliament during the current legislative term, although at a lower level than some other political groups.   NGOs reviewed the voting behaviour of EU political groups and national parties scoring them on their performance in three environmental categories.
