The ongoing dockworkers' strike along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, which began in October 2024, is significantly affecting the restaurant industry. With ports handling a vast amount of food imports, including 75% of bananas and 85% of canned foodstuffs, restaurants are facing potential shortages of key ingredients. Perishable goods like fruits and seafood, as well as imported beverages such as wine and whiskey, are at risk of delayed shipments, driving up prices and limiting availability. If the strike continues, the disruption could deepen, impacting supply chains

With the way food prices are rising, staples seem to be becoming luxury food items. Well, you may have to add hamburgers, and ground beef in general, to your revised list of "luxury" food items. #Meatprocessing #furtherprocessing #management #sustainability #foodprocessing #regulations #foodindustries #beef https://lnkd.in/esyYcRzs

https://lnkd.in/e-jQuxYa The minimum wage in California was recently increased to $20 per hour. To combat this cost increase, Pollo Campero, a fast food chain operating in 20 US states, recently mapped the foot traffic patterns of employees. Did they use a Spaghetti Diagram? They redesigned their restaurants to change the traffic patterns, cutting some employees’ daily step count nearly in half. This reduction in step count helps to offset some of the labor cost increases and helps with employee retention. By capitalizing on #lean tools used in the #manufacturing world for decades, Pollo Campero was able to increase productivity and employee retention at the same time. #hospitality : Tim Martin: JD Wetherspoon had a bumper Christmas but high labour and energy costs are bruising pubs, highlighting the disparity between pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. In an update this morning, the boss of the no-frills boozer said: “The price of a pint in a supermarket is about £1, so a 10 per cent increase in labour costs (which are around 10 pence per pint) necessitates a one pence increase in the selling price to cover costs. “However, for pubs, the average selling price of a pint is around £4.50. The labour per pint is therefore around £1.35 (30 per cent of £4.50), necessitating a 13.5 pence increase in the selling price to cover extra costs.” He added: “The inevitable consequence is that increased labour costs raise the differential in prices between the hospitality industry and supermarkets” #wagesandsalaries #inflation City AM

Food on or close to it's sell by or use by date needs to be discounted by 90% to stop food waste, only then if it is not sold should it be eligible to go biogas energy and digestate fertiliser. If it is edible, not significantly discounted and goes straight into biogas and digestate then it is food wasted. Companies that take this option need to be sanctioned.
Have you ever wondered what one of Marks and Spencer's' dumpsters might look like after closing? I wonder where the discounts are? No interest in selling this food & drink to British consumers? I recently visited the UK & I was truly gobsmacked by food prices. Is it not... ...shocking to see retailers continuing to dump out the un-discounted daily Food "Waste" via the back to produce government-subsidised "bio-eco-gas energy" & "digestate fertiliser"? This work comes from a campaigner called M. Proudman, who is dumpster diving regularly near where they live. I hope to share more of their critical work in the weeks to come to give folks an idea of what's happening out there. #foodwaste
