Sustainable and Responsible Architecture is always of value

Watching and documenting the transformation of Interlachen Country Club over the past year has been a rewarding challenge. Of all the content we created around the renovation, this series is my favorite. In the Fall of 2022, I got inspiration from a building construction timelapse and wondered if I could accomplish the same thing with our golf course. Over the next 6 months, I tested various software, flight paths, and workflows to make something like this a reality. I did tests for height, speed, and routing based on the layout of the time, but knew I'd need to capture the changes in routing (like the 10th green moving 50 yards). My goal was to fly over each hole once a week during construction, but each week presented a different challenge due to what part of the course was being worked on, heavy winds and smoke from wildfires (thanks Canada), maximizing flight time on each battery, etc. I ended up getting pretty close to one flyover a week but I had to make lots of adjustments along the way. I quickly gave up on the idea that each flight was going to be perfect and learned to chip away at optimizing each hole. I did my best to match everything up and trusted that I could do the rest in post-production. We used the footage in different ways over the summer for general course updates, but as construction started to wrap up I spent a lot of time syncing up all these flights and cutting them down into 1-2 minute videos. From there, Andrew Green crushed the narrations for us! It's not easy to succinctly describe all of the changes that happened in such a short amount of time, but he did a great job and really helped bring the final videos to life. We released the videos to our membership one hole at a time in our weekly Connections email starting in February and here we are a couple of months away from the grand re-opening! I learned so much about video production and golf course construction through this project and watching everything come to life has been such a joy!

In celebration of Heritage Day, we recognise the value of our historical and cultural landmarks. Luisa Lindsay-Smith, an Architect at LYT, emphasised the responsibility architects have in preserving these heritage sites while embracing modern design:   “South Africa has a rich and complex heritage, both tangible and intangible, that extends beyond the built environment. In Johannesburg, many buildings and areas in the inner city and surrounding suburbs have aged to the point where heritage assessments are required as part of the design and council submission process.   As architects, it is important for us to be increasingly aware that each site we work on may have heritage aspects, and we must find ways to conserve these as part of our new designs. We have a responsibility to acknowledge this heritage and find creative solutions to preserve and enhance heritage components while integrating modern-day needs and functionality into such projects. Although this can be challenging due to the outdated technology often associated with heritage sites, it should encourage us to explore new approaches and achieve a holistic design that successfully integrates modern interventions with conservation-worthy elements.   Respect for heritage aspects should be a fundamental part of our design process to ensure that important elements are not lost, thus retaining a site’s authenticity, significance, and heritage value."   #HeritageDay #HeritageDay2024 #ArchitecturalHeritage #HeritageInArchitecture #HeritagePreservation

Plans for the impending restoration of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) 66 Portland Place headquarters in London have become clearer with the release of an amended proposal outlining the scope of work for the new House of Architecture project. Benedetti Architects will head the project, which was awarded in 2022 following a brief competition. The anticipated £58.8 million project will provide complete accessibility throughout all 28 levels of the 90-year-old Art Deco skyscraper while replacing existing fossil fuel-dependent systems to reach a net zero goal. Since 1970, the original George Grey Wornum design has been protected under a historic Grade II classification. RIBA says: "[The] House of Architecture brings together three critical areas of our work that need investment, and will deliver on improvements that are fundamental to RIBA’s ongoing mission." https://lnkd.in/dN4hv8Ke

This anachronism is part of the tradition of Roman-Greek aesthetic architecture, characterised by a fetishistic rhetoric of the symbolism of power since the 18th century. The freedom and independence of institutions are encapsulated in external walls with small fenestrations, as if they wanted to distance themselves from the outside world and the noise of the streets where citizens wander with their joys and sorrows, with closed walls as if they were diseased membranes of cells whose nucleus has been affected by the lack of oxygen. This are recommendations that would “advance the policy that Federal public buildings […] be visually identifiable as civic buildings and respect regional, traditional, and classical architectural heritage in order to uplift and beautify public spaces and ennoble the United States and our system of self-government.”
