This is an interesting analysis. The role of public art in the fabric of a place is an important part of urban design. When I think of the works that have affected me the most they are place driven and site specific.
There is no one size fits all when it comes to developing a public art approach. We mapped the public art provision in #Vancouver, #Melbourne and #Dublin to show how different approaches to public art can achieve specific outcomes. 📍 Vancouver - Venues and their outdoor spaces act as points of congregation, making the area an obvious destination point. This role is enhanced and defined through public art interventions. 📍 Melbourne - Artworks are clustered along the length of Swanston Street, the main retail street, to encourage and guide visitors through the city centre. 📍 Dublin - A cluster is situated near key institutions including the National Gallery of Ireland and National Museum of Ireland in Merrion Square Park. The Park also features an outdoor arts trail enhancing the destination. Our view is that cities must take a coordinated rather than ad hoc approach to embedding public art. By studying these high-level approaches, cities can learn how to effectively create vibrant public spaces that speak to their unique character, attracting visitors and supporting local economies. There is a new space —822–in Basel. The image corresponds to the work of Charlotte von Engelberg. There are two aspects that speak positively about the way Basel perceives contemporary art and culture: the amount of available studio space and the proliferation of very carefully programmed independent art spaces. What does it mean? That the art community tries again and again to integrate itself in the fabric of the civil society; that the artistic community is aware of itself as a group and not only as an individual and that it embraces the social creating a positive environment.

The amount of sheer passion put into the preservation of the fashion, design & culture here is astounding.
Today, we proudly announced the donation of the David Jones archive to the Powerhouse – preserving and amplifying our 186-year-old history and marking the beginning of a partnership with the 143-year-old museum. The archive, which features a vast collection of preserved artefacts and documents dating back to the early 1800s, reveals several pieces that showcase the remarkable history and enduring impact we have had on Australian identity, thought and opinion. The partnership will also see us invest into the next generation of Australian designers by establishing the David Jones and Powerhouse Australian Design Commission. “David Jones shares a foundation of innovation and progress with the Powerhouse and a commitment to preserving and celebrating the stories that have helped shape our communities' cultural fabric," said our CEO, Scott Fyfe. To celebrate the partnership, Powerhouse curators unveiled a temporary exhibition ‘Like No Other – Celebrating an Australian Icon’ at our Elizabeth Street Flagship in Sydney featuring a small collection of items from the archives. #likenoother

Great way to start September at The Art Business Conference next Tuesday, 10 September in London. This event promises a packed day of insights and discussions that will shape the future of the art market. If you haven’t secured your ticket yet, now’s your chance: https://lnkd.in/dVbWvX38 Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store, and what I'm most excited about: 👉 A kick off with a conversation between Guillaume Cerutti, CEO of Christie’s, and Georgina Adam, where they’ll set the tone for the day with a deep dive into the current state of the art market. 👉 A panel on The Future of Creativity - which features prominent female leaders exploring how government policy can play a crucial role in shaping a thriving creative economy. Im looking forward to hearing Charlotte Appleyard and Charlene Prempeh speak. 👉 Discussions on Art Finance and navigating a shifting market will be particularly relevant as we face the global market’s current volatility—expect insights on new finance products and potential opportunities. Amanda Gray is amazing. Mishcon de Reya LLP 👉 Collecting & Accessibility: Editions, diving into how limited editions are opening up new paths for collectors, with me, who is honoured to be alongside David Cleaton-Roberts of Cristea Roberts Gallery, Robert Kennan of Phillips, Conner Williams of artnet. 👉 PLUS two breakout sessions: one on the resilience of the UK auction market, and another exploring the future of the gallery model—offering unique perspectives on how the art world is evolving. Thrilled to be part of this upcoming exhibition with these artists at RK Contemporary, South Africa THE DISTANCE BETWEEN There are small places in this world where artists have settled, finding where the spaces between living and creating transform into, in this case, visual artworks. Places where creatives (artists, musicians, poets, chefs and other artisans) are fortunate to be enveloped by calm and appealing environs that are conducive to creativity. With some 120 kilometres between them, covering varied landscapes from the coast moving inland, Riebeek Kasteel and Kommetjie are two such places connected by a metaphoric creative heartbeat. In describing the physicality of these two lovely places, we cannot ignore the spiritual power of the natural world, described by some as a thin place, which is where the veil between the physical and spiritual world becomes permeable and where our perspectives of the world could develop differently. Because of these beautiful places, and an idea of this aesthetic being ‘perfect’, it has to raise awareness of the opposite also being present – a place where there is so much struggle, where life is lived on the edges. However, the sense of being in a thin place can attest to the healing power of the natural world, where one could move into an in-between place, with possibility. This exhibition is a result of a concentration of people who make art, distilling an essence of where they live, continually inspired to develop their work and are also lucky enough to form their own closely knit community within Kommetjie.

Defending Local Identity: A Stand Against External Architectural Influence "It grieves me to think that we require an American justice system in Wimbledon." This response to the proposal for a Frank Gehry-designed concert hall underscores the discontent some feel about an extraordinary foreign architect imposing his vision on a place we call home. While Gehry's vision for a state-of-the-art music center promises to transform Wimbledon and enrich London's cultural life, it is seen by many as an affront to our collective security and the greater good. The idea that an outsider, however talented, can dictate the architectural landscape of our community is troubling. This project, far from being a unique opportunity, represents a challenge to our local identity and autonomy. Our community deserves development that respects and reflects our values, traditions, and needs, rather than surrendering to external influences that may not align with our collective interests. #LocalIdentity #ArchitecturalIntegrity #Wimbledon #CommunityValues #CulturalAutonomy #PreserveOurHeritage #LocalVoicesMatter #ArchitecturalSovereignty #ProtectOurHome #ResistExternalInfluence

It was so exciting to present at #FAccT2024 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I already miss the beautiful beaches, views, and delicious food. At the conference, I presented my work: "Beyond Behaviorist Representational Harms: A Plan for Measurement and Mitigation". In this work, we explore the question: What are "representational harms"? We 1) examine current definitions 2) propose an expansion to include affective and cognitive states 3) provide high-level requirements for measurement 4) outline the harms with respect to LLMs 5) discuss some mitigation strategies 6) and when to use them (i.e. morally permissible cases for harms) Read the final version here: https://lnkd.in/gCqi4cq3
Planning your #FAccT2024 itinerary? Stop by my talk on June 4th, 10:10am UTC-3 during the Conceptualizing and Operationalizing Fairness & Harms session in Copacabana A&B Rooms. We will discuss what are "representational harms" and how do we define/measure/mitigate them 🫶 Want more? Read the full paper here: https://lnkd.in/gCqi4cq3
