Reflecting on my journey with La Crosse Community Theatre's expansion into the old church building, the question "What did I get myself into?" feels particularly relevant. I’ve embarked on something both exciting and daunting. This historic space is full of potential, but realizing it will take more than just optimism and a fresh coat of paint. When we chose this church, it felt like a perfect blend of La Crosse’s history and our theatre’s future. The building has charm and character, but it’s also full of quirks—architectural features that weren’t designed with modern theatre in mind. As I settle in, I’m beginning to grasp the challenges ahead. Walking through these halls, it’s impossible not to feel the weight of what’s ahead. The building is full of potential—to become a hub for creativity and a gathering place for our community. But right now, it’s all just potential. The real work is just beginning. We have big plans, but they’re still just plans—ideas waiting to be transformed into reality. From designing new spaces to ensuring this historic building meets modern needs, there’s a lot to do. It’s a little overwhelming, but also exciting, knowing we're on the brink of something transformative for La Crosse Community Theatre. The road ahead will be challenging, with moments of doubt and unexpected surprises. But that’s part of the journey—navigating the unknown, adapting to challenges, and staying focused on my goals. This project will take time, effort, and collaboration. I’ll need to test ideas and learn as I go, but I’m committed to seeing it through because I believe in the potential of this space. So here I am, at the beginning of a long and winding journey. I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I’m confident this is a journey worth taking. There’s a lot of work to be done, but also a lot to look forward to. This building has the potential to become something truly special, and I’m ready to do the work to make that happen. In the end, what did I get myself into? A project full of challenges and possibilities—one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’ve only just begun, but I’m excited to see where this journey will take me.

The National Lottery turns 30 today. It has made a huge contribution to UK theatre buildings, being a major funder for new theatre buildings including Sadler's Wells (the first Lottery funded building to open), Hampstead Theatre, THE LOWRY CENTRE TRUST in Salford, Curve Theatre in Leicester, Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock and Courtyard Theatre in Hereford. The lottery has also funded the restoration, refurbishment and redevelopment of theatres for example New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth and Wolverhampton Grand Theatre. Amongst these are some theatres that were previously on our Theatres at Risk Register - Alexandra Palace and Park, Wilton's Music Hall, Bradford Odeon and Stockton Globe. Theatres Trust grateful to the National Lottery for its support through the National Lottery Heritage Fund for our Resilient Theatres: Resilient Communities project, which aims to reduce the threat to At Risk theatres and strengthen the theatre sector’s resilience following a difficult few years. PACE Theatre Company is pleased to announce that they have been successful in securing £391,667 from Creative Scotland Multi-Year Fund for 2025-28. The funding will be integral to the expansion of PACE’s performance, participation and creative development programmes and towards realising our vision of young people from all backgrounds inspired and fulfilled by creativity and culture. Grant Mason, Chief Executive of PACE said: “We are incredibly grateful to receive this vital funding from Creative Scotland, which will enable us to build on our commitment to providing quality arts experiences for young people in Renfrewshire and beyond. “This funding will go a long way to ensuring long-term stability for our organisation, as we continue to grow opportunities for participation including the expansion of our widening access programmes, offer support for emerging artists, and produce and receive exciting new theatre for children, young people and families. “We are acutely aware of the challenges faced by cultural organisations, and whilst we were pleased to see many of our colleagues receive support today, our thoughts are with those in our sector who didn’t receive positive news.” Read our full statement here: https://bit.ly/CSFunding25

In 1930, the U.S. had more than 22,000 movie theaters, with 75% being independently owned. Today, that number has dropped to 5,800, with nearly 75% now corporately owned. I recently wrote about a independent theater I like in Palo Alto that is at risk of being demolished for mixed-use development. I believe a more effective approach would be to invest in these community anchors and third spaces that foster social cohesion and provide affordable date night options, enhancing the movie-going experience without resorting to additional mixed-use complexes. We can revitalize the area while preserving the theater's original purpose, ultimately uplifting the community far more than these mixed-use developments have proven capable of achieving. https://lnkd.in/g4sqPV9v
