We recently took a tour around the Scunthorpe site on a diesel pacer with the Appleby Frodingham Railway.
This night tour gave a completely different view of the site as you can see in this video clip taken from the front seat. 🚆🌙
🚗What's happening to Europe's car industry (and for that matter most other regions' too) is one of the biggest stories in the world right now. It will probably be among the biggest stories of next year too.
We are witnessing a slow motion implosion driven by multiple factors (chief among them Chinese competition).
Here is my attempt to try to tell this quite complex story for television👇

A brilliant analysis, using data to simplify and visualise car supply chain shifts.
Understanding from where products are sourced, is the kind of information consumers, businesses and regulators will increasingly want to see in many industries.

Want to know why we're seeing so many unfamiliar Chinese EVs on our roads? This is a quite brilliant piece of analysis from Ed Conway on the state of the UK/EU car industry in 5 minutes, and well worth watching.
Around 20 years ago, I sat on the PR and Comms steering group for Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks. I remember those first Chinese cars coming through for crash-testing and the safety standards were generally woeful.
European and Japanese manufacturers could sleep easy, knowing the Chinese had a lot of catching up to do.
But not only have Chinese carmakers caught up on safety, they're now bossing the trade in EVs. It's so interesting to see how they've turned their disadvantage in engine-building into a huge advantage in the world of battery tech. Meanwhile more established carmakers grapple with the transition...
OK, there are brands to build and hearts to win over, but there's also the huge issue of which EVs people can afford to buy - and China has the edge.
It'll be interesting to see how long-term values hold up for Chinese EVs. That feels like a place where the prestige European carmakers, at least, could still seek refuge. But as with safety standards, they can't rest on their laurels any more.

CARMAGEDDON: A very good summary of what is happening in the automotive segment by mr. Ed Conway, presented in an excellent way. Every decision maker in the EU and the US should know it by heart!

A very insightful overview by Ed Conway regarding
the car industry and technology evolution to understand the current market, e.g. increasing taxes or relinquishing car construction facilities.
I wonder what would be the impact of mining in a longer term?

📺 Check out this informative video on the current state of the global car industry and China’s rise in the electric vehicle (EV) market. Here’s why China is leading the way:
🔋 Lower Production Costs: It's much cheaper to produce EVs in China, thanks to lower costs for key components like batteries and chassis.
💰 State Subsidies: The Chinese government provides up to 9 times more subsidies to its EV manufacturers compared to developed nations, giving them a major cost advantage.
⚡ Cheaper Energy: China's reliance on coal-powered energy results in lower production costs compared to Europe and the US, where energy prices are higher.
🔋 Battery Production Power: China controls 65% of the global EV market and 82% of the world’s battery production, as well as dominating key components like anodes and cathodes.
🔬 Technological Edge: While the EU focused on high-energy density batteries, China developed a more cost-effective and safer low-energy density battery, which is now seeing rapid growth in demand.
🌍 Global Tariffs: With many countries imposing tariffs on Chinese EVs, the UK remains a top destination for Chinese electric cars, raising questions about the future of the UK's car industry.
🌟 My Take: While these advantages are impressive, it’s worth noting that low labor costs in China mean employees in EV companies may not fully benefit from this boom. This raises concerns about sustainability in the long run, not only for the workforce but also for the broader ecosystem surrounding EV production.
The rise of EVs in China is a game-changer for the automotive industry, but the path ahead will require balancing economic growth with equitable benefits and sustainable practices.
