An interesting thing happened during swim squad last week that got me thinking about how easy it is to discount or minimize the progress we've made in our businesses. I love numbers and data—I'm great at it. Counting laps in the pool? I'm terrible at it! While doing a 500m warm-up set, I found myself counting the 300m mark not twice, but three times. I kept questioning myself, "Surely you haven't gone that far yet."* I had metrics telling me I had indeed swum more than 300m, and it was time to move on to the main set. There was the time on the pool clock, the DISTANCE counter on my watch (!) and the other swimmers were finishing the same warm-up set. Yet, I kept slipping back into this mentality of thinking I hadn't progressed. It made no logical sense. And yet, I see this happen all the time for business owners (myself included). How can there be progress that we can't see? -You're not tracking the right data (or any!) -You're not paying attention to the right data -You're not checking the metrics frequently enough -You're setting the wrong benchmarks And finally, you're likely not celebrating the progress and affirming how far you've come. (That was me.) Making progress visible is so powerful. If you're not a numbers person, enlist your support team to work on the numbers for you so that you only see the meaningful stuff that you can celebrate. (And grab Dr Selena Fisk's book "I'm Not a Numbers Person") *And yes, this was after a sleepless night!

Firstly you pay less by avoiding the late-entry surcharge. Secondly, and probably most importantly, you really help the organisers if they know who has entered. They have a much better idea how many people are going to be on the start line as they do their final planning and checks. And finallly, you can help yourself get more accurate results. The data from the pre-entries is transferred to the timekeepers before race day and they have a chance to pick up any strange anomalies in the entries. A huge part of successful racing is finishing strong, and if we want swimmers to finish strong, we have to help them learn how to do it. And it’s not just about holding speed, it’s about holding skills together as well. Stroke counts are a great way to keep track of skill. While they’re not perfect, it’s an objective number that makes things concrete. If you have swimmers negative split WITHOUT taking more strokes, we can accomplish two goals. We can help them learn to finish with speed and we can help them learn to finish with efficiency. Most swimmers struggle with both skills. In this set, we’re putting pressure on the upper body, so we’re ensuring they’re holding water throughout, and they’re using that skill to generate and sustain speed.
