All I see here is misinformation and WILDLY inaccurate AVMA Surveys which seek to fear monger for selfish motives. Why don’t you engage with the group which meets biweekly to find out the ACTUAL roles that an MLP is expected to fill, instead of spewing inaccurate facts. That’s very unbecoming of someone who is supposed to be representing the major organization responsible for promoting our profession. The MLP is NOT meant to overlap the roles of the veterinarian and veterinary technician any more the human physician’s role is meant to overlap with the nurse. Who said that someone with a masters degree would be doing unsupervised major abdominal surgery? That’s your assumption. None of the limitations of the MLP have been decided, and in fact, will ultimately be decided by individual states’ Practice Acts. How do you know that the VPCR will be established virtually before it’s been established in person? That’s not been decided. Why don’t you become part of the process instead of spreading misinformation about a process that hasn’t been formalized. Again, I say, become part of the process rather than wish you had!
Two proposals for change in the veterinary profession - the idea of a midlevel position (MLP) that would overlap the roles of the veterinarian and veterinary technician and eliminating the requirement to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) in person for telemedicine - were discussed during the AVMA House of Delegates’ (HOD) Veterinary Information Forum, which took place during the HOD’s regular winter session, held in conjunction with the #AVMAVLC. https://bit.ly/4aGl0o9
