Seismic shift in South African politics South Africa has seen a seismic political shift, following the decision of the ANC and DA to form a coalition government. Many ANC supporters see the DA as a racist party trying to make sure that white people hang on to the economic privileges they built up during the discriminatory system of apartheid. Now, the ANC has decided to enter into a coalition government with it - and has included the mainly black Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), partly to make the deal more palatable to its constituency. The coalition is being called a Government of National Unity (GNU), suggesting that it symbolises reconciliation in a nation still scarred by the racist system of apartheid. 8 minutes ago By Barbara Plett Usher, BBC News South Africa erstwhile again has a nationalist unity government, 30 years aft a akin woody helped stabilise the modulation to afloat ideology from a federation divided by the racist strategy of apartheid. This clip the ruling African National Congress (ANC) was forced to negociate an statement aft losing its controlling bulk successful elections. It marks a landmark infinitesimal for the country, with the confirmation that the ANC's caller partners see the white-led Democratic Alliance - a pairing erstwhile considered unimaginable by galore successful South Africa. The main absorption DA enactment grew retired of a national of groups which included what was near of the apartheid-era ruling National Party, and is an advocator of free-market economics astatine likelihood with the ANC’s left-wing traditions. As of Friday afternoon, overmuch of the item inactive needs to beryllium filled in. And it is inactive imaginable that ANC breakaway parties that person not joined the unity authorities could effort to power events from the outside. But the statement has fixed signifier to South Africa's governmental aboriginal arsenic its caller parliament gathered connected Friday for the archetypal clip since past month's historical elections. I'm reading posts and comments and start to realize after 30 years, South Africans are still confused on why they vote. Voting across the world is about ideology. A person who aligns with communism votes for communists. People aligning with border policies and more (nationalistic) vote for that. People aligning with liberalism votes for that. People aligning with Africanism votes for that. If a person votes for EFF or ANC, he is not a retard as "progressives" label them. If you find yourselves criticizing people voting along their ideological lines, then you are the one who doesn't understand why people are voting. There are parties that are for middle class. If you are middle class and votes a party that aligns with middle class, how do you expect people not in that bracket to align with values of middle class parties? Please stop embarrassing yourselves and let people exercise their constitutional rights of freedom of association. If your party doesn't win, it doesn't make those who won stupid, it means people do not see things the way you do.

I would urge people concerned with Venezuela to read this piece I wrote in 2022 about how groups like the Democratic Socialists of America, the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research, the People's Forum, the Center for Economic and Policy Research and others for years lied about and covered up for the crimes perpetuated by Maduro's government. https://lnkd.in/eWjJbXE6

In light of today's election results, consider the future in the form of my recent SNA Obituary on authoritarian and former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori (Nov 2, 2024). Here's what happened to Peruvian democracy in terms of the damage done by mixing political machines with family ties. As the Trump Family is poised to retake power, I consider today to be the true start of the descent of the USA from a "flawed democracy" to a "hybrid regime" in terms of the EIU Democracy Index. Democracies don't die anymore at gunpoint. They generally elect their authoritarians. The Fujimori Case is thus is a useful portent of America's future.

Despite winning only 53% of the vote in #Iran, President Masoud #Pezeshkian’s victory was supported by reformists and many Iranians who preferred him over his hardliner rival Saeed Jalili. “Given the constrained environment within the Islamic Republic and the dominance of conservative elements, combined with reformists’ reluctance or inability to mobilize new social bases—such as a new generation of youth and ethnic groups—reformists’ influence appears to be in decline. The renewed opportunity given to Pezeshkian by sections of the Iranian electorate—after a series of poor electoral performances by reformists in recent years—has raised expectations for his performance,” explains Mohammed A. Salih. Read his take on why the country’s “reformists” struggle in the shifting political landscape.
