Does Britain still need the Labour Party? This question resonates deeply as the party grapples with an identity crisis and struggles to maintain relevance in a rapidly changing political landscape. Once a formidable force for working-class representation and social justice, Labour’s trajectory has been marked by both achievements and controversies, leaving many to question its purpose today. #EUToday #LabourParty #KeirStarmer

In my latest article for Bloomsbury Intelligence and Security Institute I outline some of the broader implications of the 2024 UK Election, with a focus on what issues Starmer will face moving forward particularly given the growing influence of the far-right in British politics. Take a read below!
🌟 📈 Labour's Landslide Victory: A Drastic Shift in British Politics. Insights by Harry Glover! 🌐 The landslide victory for Labour suggests a significant change in British politics, halting the rise of right-leaning agendas across Europe and the West. However, this win is marked by a dramatic reduction in vote share for both the Conservative Party and the SNP, with Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats gaining ground. 📌 Key Takeaways: • Labour's Victory: Despite their win, Labour's 33.7% vote share indicates a low approval rating for incoming PM Starmer, who must now prove his ability to deliver change. • Conservative Decline: Hard-line stances on immigration and protest policing, coupled with scandals and economic failures, have led to the Conservatives' sharp decline, favouring Reform UK, which secured 4 seats with 14% of the vote share. • Liberal Democrats' Surge: Tactical voting against the Conservatives led to the Liberal Democrats' best year since 1923, winning 72 seats with 12% of the vote share. 📊 Challenges Ahead for Labour: • Economic Concerns: Starmer's pledges, such as creating GB Energy and investing in the NHS, raise questions about funding without tax increases. • Far-Right Influence: Figures like Suella Braverman and Nigel Farage gain traction, making immigration a focal point. Starmer must navigate these polarising issues within Parliament. • Party Cohesion: Maintaining unity within Labour on contentious issues like the war in Gaza will be crucial for Starmer's success. 💼 Moving Forward: Starmer’s mandate allows him to push through critical policies aimed at fixing the NHS, stabilising the economy, improving state education, and reducing illegal migration. His success will depend on his ability to follow through on his promises and maintain party cohesion. To read more, click here: https://lnkd.in/dDUDq2Ra 👉 Join the conversation! Rebuild the Nation Repair the Social Fabric Get Career Politicians Out of Canberra ___ We face Ten #BigNationalChallenges that are way too big for our second rate politicians. Neither the Albanese Government nor a Dutton Government has a clue where to begin in addressing them. Both are #clueless. These challenges demand a new wave of #leadership in the country that will have to be generated from civil society, not from political class or from government. 1. We face major #nationalsecurity challenges without a culture of taking responsibility for our own national defence. We’ve outsourced that responsibility to foreigners for all of our history. 2. We unilaterally #globalised our economy to an extreme degree at the end of the 20th century, undermining our sovereignty in essential energy, fuel, technical and communications capabilities. We've failed to skill up our own people and are dependent on imported expertise in virtually every field. 3. We adopted #highimmigration as a generator of fake economic growth and a substitute for innovation and entrepreneurship, having destroyed our own manufacturing industry. 4. Our Commonwealth #debt is set to pass the $1 trillion mark in 2024/25, with another $400bn in state and local government debt, with no forseeable downward turn. 5. We have a bloated #publicsector, with a politicised and unaccountable public service, which now threatens the viability of our mixed economy tradition. We no longer have a balance between public, private and third sectors. 6. We have a lazy #corporate sector that lacks genuine entrepreneurs and fears global markets, and relies on domestic mergers, restriction of competition, and high immigration for growth instead of global exports. 7. #Energy policy is a shambles, victim of a self-defeating civil war between climate alarmists and deniers which has resulted in taxpayers subsidising both fossil fuels and renewables. We do not have an open competitive energy market that is energy-source neutral. 8. #School and university education, and VET, are in deep crisis in quality and purpose. We are sliding down the global rankings rapidly. 9. #Servicedelivery in health, social and community services is provider-captured and dysfunctional. It has failed to Close the Gap for indigenous people. It has failed to curb increasing rates of chronic and mental illness, family breakdown and violence, suicide and substance abuse. It increases welfare dependence. 10. Our #media is dominated by two unaccountable corporations. The ABC and NewsCorp are both politically aligned, exclude diverse opinions, and wield excessively high levels of market power. ___ Join #DemocracyFirst today. Today’s UK general election is a pivotal moment for our country. With the economy struggling, the NHS in crisis, and immigration issues at the forefront, our votes are more important than ever. Both major parties, the Conservatives and Labour, offer different solutions, and the outcome will shape the nation’s future. This election also highlights the importance of recognising and addressing the needs of UK’s multicultural society. Communities, especially those feeling overlooked could send their vote in a direction least expected. Plus the current humanitarian issues have impacted people's perception of our current leaders. We are a rich pot of diversity. It’s crucial for MPs to reflect the diversity of our nation and ensure all voices contribute to the political process. Additionally, parties like the Green's and Independent may attract votes from those dissatisfied with the major parties stance on issues close to their heart and issues that make us proud to be British and part of a society that should be empathic, equitable and just. Our vote is our voice. By participating, we help ensure we elect a competent government that listens to its people and addresses their needs. Let’s make sure to use our votes today and be part of building a better future for everyone. Clearly the current status quo cannot continue. Please use your Vote today, it's your voice so amplify it loud and clear. #voteforchange2024 #ReducePoverty #investintheNHS #equitable #FinancialFreedom #diversityequityinclusion #HumanityFirst #CostOfLivingSupport #YourVoteMatters

Did the left make neoliberalism? Virginia Crespi de Valldaura and Gianmarco Fifi explain that Europe's left has played an unexpected role in sustaining neoliberalism since the late 1970s and 1980s. Contrary to popular wisdom, left-wing parties and trade unions were not merely passive victims of a right-wing neoliberal wave. Instead, they played an active role in shaping and legitimising neoliberal policies. https://lnkd.in/gTQi_pUV

🤔 Who said this - Nigel Farage at last weekend's Reform Party conference or Sir Keir Starmer addressing the Labour Party this week? 👇 🗣 “I have never thought we should be relaxed about some sectors importing labour when there are millions of young people, ambitious and highly talented, who are desperate to work and contribute.” But of course this is Keir Starmer making a dangerous and simplistic conflation of #immigration with #employment levels often debunked by economists and the Migration Advisory Committee too. Dangerous, because this links immigrants in the minds of people listening to the speech with unemployment - which, according to the Office of National Statistics, is at a low. Why is Starmer squandering his record parliamentary majority by repeating Farage's xenophobic narrative that immigration is a problem to be reduced rather than a natural part of the history and prosperity of every nation? #UKimmigration is already coming down, and with it, the UK's potential for growth, hampering various areas that depend on #migration, from the #universities that educate our youth to the #caresector that looks after our elderly, plus many important sectors from #construction and #engineering to our enviable $1.1 trillion #techsector. By banging an anti-immigration xenophobic drum at the #LabourConference, the Prime Minister will only strengthen the one narrative that Nigel Farage and the front-runner for next Conservative Party leader Robert Jenrick have to fall back on, one that simplistically blames immigrants for both complex and invented problems, and one that led to ugly anti-immigrant riots this summer. Surely this is both stupid and dangerous? Am I missing something?
