When Coalition on Adult Basic Education interviewed Marina Kravtsova and myself about the article on advocacy that we co-authored for the COABE Journal, I mentioned wisdom shared with me by someone ahead of me on the path of advocacy. In my stress of being interviewed, I couldn't recall her name. It was Marilyn Noble! Marilyn is the person I spoke of in that interview. Marilyn was sometimes known as one of the Mothers of the Free Speech Movement. She was also a powerhouse champion of #AdultEducation through her work as a longtime teacher of English as a Second Language and Family Literacy and and her years of service as a California Federation of Teachers union member and representative on the CFT Adult Ed Committee. In my early days of advocacy, at a local conference, she grabbed my arm and pulled me aside to explain the importance of what is often rarely discussed in conversations on successful advocacy - food, organization, support systems of various kinds. At future events, she would similarly pull me aside to share some tidbit of knowledge, wisdom, or strategy about advocacy and Adult Education. These generosities were so helpful, so precious, so invaluable. Marilyn passed in April of this year. I want to publicly show my respect and appreciation for her - for the work she accomplished and for her choice to share what she knew with those of us walking similar paths. Advocacy is a transferable skill - in more than one way. Alone, we can apply it to many different parts of our lives - personal and professional - and enjoy the benefits. Shared, we can be part of benefits that are bigger and longer lasting than what we could every do alone. Thank you for sharing, Marilyn. Through a collaborative effort, the CSE aims to establish inclusive educational environments that enable all students to achieve their maximum potential. Working for the empowerment of children can be a challenging yet insightful experience. One demotivating observation in this journey is that children are often not treated as major stakeholders in discussions about child rights. They are frequently seen as subjects to be controlled and monitored, with little say in the approaches adopted towards them. I have encountered the argument that there's no need to educate children about their rights because they might misuse them. However, it's essential to critically analyze this assumption and weigh it on a scale of benefits and losses. There should be a free flow of education among children to teach them about rights and wrongs. Most importantly, we need to have faith in our children. If an institution refuses to educate children about their rights out of fear that they might start claiming them and taking action, then there is definitely a need to step back and reflect on our actions as an institution. #childrights #education #righttoeducation #children #UN #empowerment
