https://lnkd.in/gmUHDpg2 A refreshed approach to marketing has played a central role in helping the Coca-Cola Company expand its consumer base by more than 10% in the last couple of years, after two decades of largely static performance on this metric. Manolo Arroyo, the company’s global chief marketing officer, discussed this topic at a session held by WPP Group at the 2024 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Why marketing transformation matters Delivering breakthrough results often necessitates making bold choices on how to structure and organise the marketing ecosystem. In an increasingly complex landscape, brands need to make sure their strategies and agency relationships cohesively extend across a wide range of disciplines, from creativity and media to digital commerce. Marketing powers growth Coca-Cola, Arroyo told the Cannes audience, has effectively managed to reach new buyers following a long-term struggle in this area. “After maintaining the same consumer base for 20 years, and not being able to grow it, in just two years we’ve grown it more than 11% so far,” he said. And marketing, Arroyo further explained, has been vital in powering growth: the Coca-Cola Company’s full-year 2023 revenues climbed by 6% to $45.8 billion. “Marketing is again driving the growth of the company – driving growth in terms of actual consumption, the consumer base and actual economic value creation,” he reported. A new model works A key contributor to success is a new agency model. In late 2021, Coca-Cola named WPP Group – the holding company – as its global network partner. Specifically, WPP was given responsibility for more than 200 brands in 195 countries, and it set up a dedicated agency, called Open X, to handle the account. In the first year of this tie-up, WPP took control of creative, media, production and social; in the second, it added commerce, data, experiential, influencer marketing and tech. “I have no doubt that the model we're building will become the leading model for the industry,” Arroyo said. “The best medicine for complexity is simplicity – and one single model that intimately connects creativity, media, technology and data is the way to go.” Internal inspiration Alongside fueling growth among consumers, Coca-Cola’s refreshed marketing approach is having a positive impact across its entire business system. Coca-Cola’s bottling partners, for example, are responsible for manufacturing, packaging and distributing its drinks, and are huge businesses in their own right. “What they want to see is marketing that wows them, and not only wows them, but drives growth. And they're really genuinely inspired,” Arroyo said. “People are talking that we're getting the inspiration back – and the magic back.”

Ad campaigns offer a multitude of benefits, ranging from increased brand awareness and targeted reach to driving sales and fostering long-term growth. By leveraging the power of advertising effectively, businesses can achieve their marketing objectives and stay ahead in today's competitive landscape. 1.Increased Brand Awareness: Advertising campaigns are instrumental in boosting brand visibility and recognition. By consistently putting your brand in front of potential customers through various channels such as TV, social media, or print, you increase the likelihood of people remembering and recognizing your brand when they're ready to make a purchase decision. 2.Targeted Reach: With advanced targeting options available through online advertising platforms, businesses can reach specific demographics, interests, behaviors, and even geographic locations. This precision targeting ensures that your ads are seen by the most relevant audience, maximizing the chances of engagement and conversions. 3.Building Brand Authority and Trust: Continuous exposure to your brand through advertising helps establish credibility and trust among consumers. When they repeatedly see your brand associated with quality products or services, they're more likely to perceive your business as reputable and trustworthy. 4.Stimulating Engagement: Effective advertising campaigns not only inform potential customers about your offerings but also encourage them to engage with your brand. This engagement can take various forms, such as likes, comments, shares, website visits, or even direct inquiries, all of which contribute to building a relationship with your audience. 5.Driving Sales and Conversions: Ultimately, the primary goal of advertising is to drive sales and conversions. By strategically crafting your messaging, targeting the right audience, and utilizing compelling visuals or calls-to-action, you can prompt potential customers to take the desired action, whether it's making a purchase, signing up for a newsletter, or requesting more information. 6.Measurable Results: Unlike traditional forms of advertising, digital advertising offers robust analytics and tracking capabilities, allowing you to measure the performance of your campaigns in real-time. You can track metrics such as impressions, clicks, conversions, and return on investment (ROI), enabling you to refine your strategies and optimize future campaigns for better results. 7.Long-term Growth and Sustainability: Consistent advertising builds momentum for your brand over time, contributing to long-term growth and sustainability. By maintaining a visible presence in the market and staying top-of-mind with consumers, you can secure a steady flow of customers and solidify your position in the industry. Yesterday our paid team launched our first big brand campaign. And here’s what it taught me about paid media…. Technical and strategic knowledge isn’t enough. Even when you work in-house, there are times when you have to work as an agency. And that work is fundamentally different than most of the day-to-day. Most of the time, the paid team just has to use their budget to hit a target. That’s it. Obviously it isn’t easy in a “do more with less” era, but in many ways it’s pretty straightforward. You don’t need to bring a stakeholder along for the ride. You don’t need to give campaign specific updates. You don’t need to share setup and targeting. And most importantly, you aren’t responsible for the success of somebody else’s baby. When you take requests from other teams, that changes. There are more steps. There are more people. There are more questions. And those campaigns are sometimes the culmination of months of another team’s work. The easy answer is just to take on less campaign requests. But I believe the best marketing teams use paid to maximize the distribution of everybody’s work. The trick is figuring out how to operationalize it. So other teams know when and how to leverage paid. And paid avoids just becoming order takers. If you’ve got any tips, send them my way 😅

You can do offline marketing and still get the best results. As digital marketing takes center stage, traditional marketing strategies, such as print or broadcast ads, may appear outdated. However, many don’t realize that effective marketing begins with building genuine connections with consumers. I’m not saying you should abandon the online world entirely. The secret to successful modern marketing lies in a well-rounded mix of digital and physical approaches. Marketing offline can spark interest and brand awareness, while online platforms deliver comprehensive information, boost engagement, and nurture lasting customer relationships. If you’re not sure where to start, here are some fail-proof offline marketing ideas to try to encourage customer engagement: • Dynamic OOH advertising: Integrate QR codes at billboards, bus shelters, transit ads, or high-traffic areas to capture attention. This lets you easily transport people into an interactive experience as they move through their day. • Smart networking: Incorporate a vCard QR code into your business cards when joining conferences, industry events, or trade shows. You’re not only handing out sleek cards but a functional one that leads people to your website and social media pages or have your contact details saved directly into their phones. • QR-smart guerilla campaign: By including QR codes in your guerilla marketing tactics, you can catch the attention of passersby twice as quickly and invite them to see the product and what’s waiting behind the code. Whether it’s a massive display at Times Square or a clever ad on a city bus, offline marketing engages people in unique and memorable ways. Let’s take a look at how businesses have used QR codes in their marketing campaigns to connect with their audience: • Santander Bank and Love Creative’s reverse graffiti campaign: To promote the British Grand Prix, Santander and Love Creative Marketing - Guerrilla Street Marketing Experts collaborated to transform London’s iconic landmarks into dynamic works of art. Scanning the code hidden under stencils directed users to a contest website, giving them a chance to win to drive a Formula 1 car. • Campaign Against Living Miserably: Calm against living mi, a UK-based charity dedicated to suicide prevention, launched an OOH advertising through billboards with the message “STAY” alongside QR codes. Scanning the code takes users to CALM’s website, which offers vital resources and help. There’s something undeniably powerful about real-world connection, and QR codes allow you to achieve precisely that. Remember, offline and digital marketing aren’t rivals but allies, working together for a complete strategy.
