#evcharging strategy question: Does "build it and they will change" work for the transition to #electricvehicles? There are a lot of different opinions flying about, but it certainly makes the difference for some people. Listen to the thought processes of this #Redbridge resident. The great news is this type public charging is coming to many more parts of Britain as councils engage in facilitating local public charging like never before. So we should see many more people outside of London seeing charge points in their street and thinking "great, now I can easily live with an EV despite not having a driveway". Let's drive that change! Municipal vehicle fleets are commonly one of the largest sources of corporate emissions. Many municipalities are moving ahead with shifting out of fossil burning vehicles towards EVs and Victoria Electric Vehicle Association likes to acknowledge and encourage municipal leaders when we can. From Colwood staff: "...Transportation is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Colwood and we're taking steps to change that over time. Currently the City’s fleet is 24% zero emission and 7% hybrid. By 2024, 36% of the fleet is projected to be zero emission as replacement vehicles are introduced. In terms of fiscal responsibility, this saves an estimated 33% over the life of each vehicle compared to a conventional gas car or truck, due to the reduced cost of fuel and maintenance. Most importantly, switching to electric reduces Colwood’s emissions which contribute to climate change. In 2021, 51% of Colwood's Corporate GHG emissions were generated by our fleet vehicles. The move to electric vehicles and equipment will reduce our emissions by an estimated 37 tonnes every year, at a savings of $426 for every tonne...." The City of Colwood, part of the Victoria BC Capital Regional District, has been growing it's EV fleet and John Russell's leadership has been key to their success. One of my pet peeves - double utility poles - is going to take another big step forward towards a resolution for Norwalkers. It will help eliminate eye sores and improve safety. The City of Norwalk, Connecticut has been added to the latest round of a pilot program designed to remove double poles and speed-up the process of transferring utilities from an old pole to a new one. The process of removing unsightly double poles is expected to begin before the end of the year. I convened a group over a year ago out of frustration of too many double poles and not enough done to get rid of them. We’ve all worked together at quarterly meetings getting action reducing and ultimately eliminating the sometimes years-long backlog to get as current as possible. While we were having a lot of success, this new pilot program promises to be much more efficient and transformative. The pilot system will send one crew to move the communications lines, which should take about a month and a half instead of the year-long timeline we've seen in the past." Thanks to Mayor Harry Rilling, Norwalk Director of Transportation, Mobility and Parking Jim Travers, Norwalk Public Works Director Vanessa Nobre Valadares, the South Norwalk Electric and Water Third Taxing District, Consumer Counsel Claire Coleman and Burt Cohen of the Connecticut Office of Consumer Counsel, and Eversource, Frontier and Altice for their input and cooperation over the past year in adding Norwalk to the pilot program. The term “double pole” refers to the situation when a replacement utility pole is built alongside the pole to be replaced for the purpose of transferring the electric, telephone, cable, or other wires from one pole to the other.

Hundreds of you made pledges to do more to help make California air safer to breathe. Events occurred in every Caltrans district throughout September and early October. We can all commit to making lifestyle changes whenever feasible to help keep the air clean in our communities. Change can start small, like taking public transit to work once a week, and lead to larger investments, like purchasing a zero-emission vehicle. Check this out from last week’s #idlereduction poll.  A division of two solitudes in management philosophy on idling: https://lnkd.in/gHG9AwtT Despite 54% of organizations appearing to agree that their managers would be enthusiastic boosters of idle reduction, 46% say ‘it’s not happening in their fleet.’ And it’s always very easy to be an armchair quarterback vs having to manage a highly complex, demanding fleet operation from day-to-day. However, if you’re in crisis mode RE: fuel spend, parts spend, runaway maintenance costs, technician hours, emissions reductions targets, etc. and you are not addressing rampant ‘60’s idling’ beliefs and behaviors destroying fuel budgets, parts, lifecycle, exacerbating tech time shortages, then my observation would be that it’s like you are shooting yourself in the foot! You’ve got to stop needless fuel burn of vehicles not in motion and reduce its’ downstream destruction.
