Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development’s Post

Today, the United Nations held an informal consultation on the Global Digital Compact (GDC), focusing on the need for digital cooperation. The Internet is a by-product of collaboration and, in the past 20 years, this collaboration has been embodied in the multistakeholder model. In fact, everywhere you look, you will see communities of stakeholders collaborating to address critical Internet policy and technology issues. Here is my brief intervention as part of the consultation process.

The Zero Draft of the Global Digital Compact has the Internet governance crowd buzzing these days, so I'm adding my lukewarm take to the flurry of opinions. Despite intense discussion and momentum toward net zero, we are not yet on track to meet the Paris Agreement. It is now clear that, to reach our sustainability goals, we cannot only depend on domestic politics to accelerate innovation and deployment at scale of climate technologies, but must also depend on wise leadership, technology, responsible companies, and, most importantly, collaboration. Bo Ekelund, Partner at Amrop Sweden and one of our leaders in Telecom, met in London with Mats Granryd, the Director General of GSMA, to discuss the work of GSMA and the path forward. Steven Moore, Head of Climate Action at GSMA joined the discussion and shared examples of concrete work. Amrop's Telecom sub-practice, represented by Ekelund, as well as Oana Ciornei, Jan Kirkerud, Mika Suortti, Viesturs Liegis, Benoit Lison and Tarunesh Madan, continuously work with thought leaders, partake in industry discussions and collaborations on human capital, serve device manufacturers, telecom operators, infrastructure, cloud and service providers in helping pioneer industry leadership across all our offices.
