Ontario's local brewery wants to remain Ontario's local brewery... but we need some help! As an founding member of the Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB), we, alongside all independent breweries in the province, are advocating for tax reform to ensure our industry has a healthy and sustainable future. Breweries in Ontario pay the highest beer tax in all of Canada, 8x more than those operating in Alberta, and the Ontario craft brewery basic beer tax rose almost three times faster than the basic beer tax for the internationally-owned brewing companies since 2010. This limits craft brewers’ (like GLB's) ability to invest in their breweries, employees, and communities. We also pay, along with other alcohol producers, a $.09 CAN TAX each time we put our beer in a can - no other sector pay this (soda, energy drinks, etc). It is separate from the deposit paid by consumers and the fees charged by The Beer Store to process the can, and it is unnecessary. So, what can you do to help? You can start by visiting the website www.keepcraftbeerlocal.ca and connect with your local MPP (it takes seconds) to voice your concern for the state of Ontario’s Craft Brewers. Here are some facts to illustrate what craft breweries mean to local communities: - 90% of Ontarians have a bricks-and-mortar craft brewery in their community - More than 5 million people visit Ontario craft breweries annually - 31,000 Ontarians live in a household supported by the industry - Ontario craft breweries have generated a total of $685 million in GDP annually - Craft beer represents just 11% of the Ontario beer market, but accounts for 80% of brewery jobs.
