Friends and advocacy leaders: Advocates who are comfortable are more effective, right? Majority in the Middle started Silly Question Saturday to help demystify the #mnleg legislature, and get people more comfortable with navigating the literal halls of power. We're hosting three events at the capitol this fall, and they're free to attend. People just need to sign up ahead of time. If you have volunteer community advocates -- or clients, or students, or staff, or whoever -- who could use a way to get more comfortable in a judgement-free environment, this could be a good opportunity for them. Last Night at Spokane City Council Legislative Session: ✔ Ordinance C36516 establishing a definition of "emergency" for the purposes of governing legislation of the City Council and ensuring the appropriate use of emergency ordinances, and adding a new section 01.01.080 to the Spokane Municipal Code (SMC). ➕ CM Cathcart conveyed that this doesn't address executive emergency powers and only relates to council powers. He also stated that this is a very reasonable reform that puts guard rails on what is considered an emergency. ➕ CM Bingle felt confident with the ordinance because it better defines what an emergency is. ❗ CM Zappone had many reservations about the ordinance and made a motion to defer until May 20th. ✳ Interesting that this ordinance passed and had very little problems at the previous 330pm Briefing Session. What changed in those few hours in between the 330pm session and the 6pm session? ❗ Ordinance was deferred to May 20th by a vote of 5-2. CM Cathcart and CM Bingle voting in opposition to the deferment. ✔ Public Forum: +4 People spoke about the Israeli and Palestinian Conflict +1 Person testified about the current City Council blaming the former administration for it's financial pitfalls and the hypocrisy behind it. +1 Person spoke about the heavy security at the Expo 74' 50th Anniversary Celebration that was held over the weekend. +1 Individual testified about their opposition to Mayor Brown's State of the City Address inviting aerospace companies to Spokane. +1 Person testified on their opposition to the proposal to move House of Charity from it's current location to an area downtown. +1 Individual spoke about being in a physical altercation outside Council Chambers due to someone not liking their testimony about a certain subject. +1 Person testified on the divide between American Citizens that seems to be increasing not only in our city, but across the nation as well. ✔ All Council Members were present last night. #ShortMeeting #Deferment #SpokaneCityCouncil

We're launching restorative justice listening circles for our members. These circles provide a safe space to discuss community matters, facilitated by skilled professionals. Members can choose between in-person or virtual circles. Listening circles are a structured way for everyone to speak and be heard, drawing from meaningful historical traditions. Our attendants will learn more about the history. They help groups make decisions, celebrate successes, resolve conflicts, take responsibility, and support each other during challenges. The goal is for everyone to feel secure sharing their thoughts and knowing they are respected by the entire group.
