🦄 Creative Myth #1: Your Work Speaks for Itself If you are a Creative, you may have fallen into the trap at some point of your career believing that your work speaks for itself. That may be true 20 to 30 years ago when marketing/advertising looked a lot different then. Today that looks dramatically different as clients and brands hire creative services to yield business results. Not that they did not in the past, but paying for creative services to support marketing that aligns with business objectives is even more important in an economic downturn. Your portfolio cannot be your differentiator. Many creatives are taught to, and LOVE to tell their clients and prospects “NO” Some believe NO means “Next Opportunity” Some believe: No sets boundaries No establishes value No leads to higher prices Let me submit that “NO” leads to limited growth I believe in my heart NO means “Narcissistically Oblivious” For most creatives NO comes from a place of arrogance, elitism, or a better than thou attitude Don’t be that creative!!! This doesn’t mean creative is a YES to everything game either. There's a fundamental mindset change that has to happen in the creative space. Not everything is black-and-white; most things actually fall in the gray areas. We’ve all worked with clients who come in with a “clear vision” of what they want to achieve and exactly how they think it should happen... good or bad, right or wrong. Our job is to strike the right balance between *what* our clients want to deliver and *the most effective way to achieve the results they're after.* Declining an idea means missing out on the opportunity to explore the "how." That said, agreeing doesn’t mean you have to follow every client suggestion to the letter. You can embrace the concept while offering a smarter, more effective way to achieve the desired outcomes. After all, you’re the expert here, right? By keeping our eyes on both the results and our creative process, we can find the sweet spot between delivering exceptional work and achieving exactly what the client needs—even if it’s not in the way they originally envisioned. Most of the time, this type of collaboration leads to better outcomes anyway.

A successful project starts with a successful brief. Here are some tips to build a better one!

Before I'm an #artist before I'm a #graphicdesigner I'm a communicator and a problem solver. Clients return to me because I provide answers and results when others cannot. Clients think of me when they need to make an impact, need to make a mark, need to wow their audience with something bold or unexpected. Teams I've worked with (hopefully) remember me for being easy to work with, being a good listener, and being a cool head under pressure. Creative work can never really "speak for itself", decisions and compromises were made all along the way to bring the work to the public. The story, the drama, the purpose behind those decisions are an important part of the work itself and helped shape it into what it became. Kickoff conversations with new clients are only a fraction of story telling of what work I've done, the majority of the conversation is the problems I solved, the results I delivered, the business dilemmas I helped others overcome. I think this plays a role in the freedoms I get as a creative partner. Too often I see creative people pigeonholed by a project because they don't show the trust, the risk management side of what they do up front. You should always listen to clients, but when you can talk design and business, it shows you as a peer to clients rather than a tool or an asset. This gives your creativity more room to flourish, with you having to justify less of your decisions because you've laid the groundwork that you are someone to be trusted with their valuable brand, often their livelihood.
