There’s a lot to love about living in rural and regional Australia, but sometimes living outside the cities can be hard. Over the last decade, the Regional Wellbeing Survey has highlighted the challenges rural Australians face such as accessing GPs, childcare, and tradies. Findings have also shown that people living in rural communities are often more socially connected compared to those living in the cities. Data from the Regional Wellbeing Survey captures the opportunities and challenges faced by people in rural and regional Australia and helps mobilise solutions. Around 20% of our elders living in aged care, are located in regional and remote Australia (MMM4-7). The presence of an aged care home in a regional town allows families, loved ones and communities to stay connected and also stops the fragmentation of these precious and often iconic towns. At a time where our regions are fighting for funding and services, I am super proud of the Whiddon team, who this week completed a two year, $13 Million journey that has resulted in an expansive upgrade to three of our incredible regional homes. This includes 50 room refurbishments, upgrades to common areas, dedicated palliative care, the expansion of our “home style” kitchen model and refurbished dining areas among a host of other works. Importantly this investment has been directed at three of our beautiful regional locations; Narrabri (MMM4), Wingham (MMM3) and Bourke (MMM7). This important investment will benefit 300 residents and team members, improving living, lifestyle, care and wellbeing outcomes. These regional towns have also benefitted from the economic activity this investment has brought, including employment and vital spending directed at local business. The reality is, that from an investment perspective, often these projects arent viable, however this doesn’t take away from the fact that there is an urgent community need to do more. Thanks to a significant capital funding contribution from the Federal Government, Whiddon has been able to bring these projects to life and there is more to come. Pleasingly the community is responding, with wait lists now being addressed and residents moving in, which finally means we can meet the need within these wonderful communities. This is what the role of an aged care provider is all about and as an NFP, its ensuring we are fulfilling our role and positively impacting the people and communities that we serve.

Meanwhile Randwick Council hit $1.3m for a 2 bedder but only have a 4000 dwelling target when it should be 40,000. City planning is as sensible as selling ice cream in Antarctica instead of at an Australian beach. This is what a public builder does and why we should not give them more money. They don’t have the guts to dip a toe in the east where people want to live, that’s where it’s feasible, but there are untouchable NIMBYs. We would have to pay a lot more tax for instantly written off housing in Silverton if we funded more public construction. If planning restrictions were eased where people want to live, thats when we should give Landcom more money - but we wouldnt have to because it’s feasible for the private sector to deliver.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Fizz the Fuzz and Dr. Tómas Aragón Indoor air quality can be a hefty topic, but it’s becoming elementary, thanks to “Fizz the Fuzz". The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director, Dr. Tomás Aragón, was the guest of honor at the County of San Luis Obispo (SLO) Public Health Department’s book launch in June. He read the bilingual children’s story to an engaged and responsive group of local children and other invited guests. “Children are at higher risk from poor air quality,” said Kelsi Elliott, community engagement coordinator with the SLO County Public Health Department and author of the book. “Children breathe more air into their bodies than adults, relative to their size. They tend to be more active, and their organs are still developing.” “Fizz the Fuzz” follows a loveable piece of dust through all four seasons and teaches young children and their caregivers about indoor air quality, with tips about simple actions such as removing dust and opening windows when the outdoor air quality is good. The SLO Public Health Department developed "Fizz the Fuzz" with funding from the CDPH Indoor Air Quality Community Education Award as part of California’s SMARTER plan. An advisory team, including representatives from First 5, childcare center directors, educators, and others, ensured the story would appeal to SLO’s youngest community members. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people in the U.S. spend about 90% of their time indoors. This is why it is imperative to maintain a healthy indoor air quality, especially for those most vulnerable to poor air quality, like young children. "Fizz the Fuzz" is designed for busy childcare providers to use in their day-to-day instruction and is being distributed throughout SLO County this summer and fall. The Childcare Resource & Referral Network will also distribute the book statewide, with funding from CDPH. 🌈🎈 Nanolino, the PSI day-care centre, returns to the campus! The big move has been completed – after four years in the neighbouring municipality of Rüfenach, the day-care children are returning to the PSI campus. The new building is not just a custom-designed child’s dream 🤩; it is also perfectly adapted to the adult world and childcare practices. “We were very fortunate to be able to design a day-care centre based entirely on our needs,” says Simone Brunner Steiner, head of the Nanolino day-care centre. The result is a modern timber structure with lots of windows looking out onto nature – situated between the forest and the River Aare. Six groups can be supervised here, and the construction offers the possibility of adding an upper floor for two additional groups at a later date.   “PSI needs to think long-term, remain an attractive employer and continue to improve work-life balance," adds Brunner. In addition, Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare means that further employees are moving into the neighbourhood who may need to find childcare nearby. Many “small” details have been incorporated in the new day-care centre to allow the children to move around as independently as possible. Reflections on Regional Aged Care: A Personal Note Over the last month, I’ve travelled through the Kimberley, the Great Southern and the Wheatbelt working on aged care and housing projects. These visits left me reflecting deeply on the differences between aged care in regional areas and the city and more importantly the untold stories of the regions. In the regions, the rooms often feel larger, more personal and filled with the belongings that truly make them home. There’s a sense of comfort, connection and individuality that stands out. And while city-based aged care also delivers excellent outcomes, there’s something unique about care in regional locations. Perhaps it’s the opportunity to keep people local, on country, or close to where they’ve lived most of their lives. It’s not just a First Nations principle; it’s a human desire, one we all share. But investing in regional aged care is challenging. Funding remains a significant hurdle and exploring alternate models of care whether residential accommodation, aging in place or other-scale solutions, can be financially and operationally complex. I love my City projects, you know that and I will climb mountains with project teams to find the best outcome for the community, budget and the organisation, but I believe regional aged care is worth fighting for as well. It offers a rare opportunity to preserve community connections, enhance quality of life and ensure people are cared for in the places they call home.
