#DidYouKnow since the start of 2023, Latvian residents have donated over €500,000 through reverse vending machines (RVMs) to various charitable causes? 🙌 Here are some highlights: 👉 36% of donations (€182,261) have supported Ukrainian children and refugees 👉 36% (€180,092) have gone to animal shelters, helping 2,410 animals in 6 shelters across Latvia 👉 16% (€82,309) have supported seniors in need, providing essential daily goods and medical services 👉 Additionally, the "Age is Not Lonely" project at Lidl stores has raised over €51,000 for seniors. This generosity highlights how deposit return systems (DRS) not only promote recycling and environmental cleanliness but also generate meaningful social-economic outcomes, including additional revenue streams for charities and other non-profit organisations. If 96% of UK charities describe themselves as "small", is it time to start redefining what we mean by 'small charities'? Surely the term 'small charity' must bear some relation to the size of charities more broadly. You can't say a rhino is a small animal simply because it's much smaller than a blue whale. It would be absurd to say France is a small country because Canada is so much bigger. So why do we persist in considering charities with 20 salaried staff and a turnover of £1m a year "small". We are delighted that Newcastle Building Society has made an additional £1m donation to the Newcastle Building Society Community Fund at the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. The donation boosts the total value of the fund to £3.5m, making it one of the largest of its type in the country. The fund, which is held by the Community Foundation is expected to make grants around £150,000 each and every year to charities tackling issues linked to food poverty, work and opportunity, debt management, homelessness, and sustainability.

At OVO Foundation, we've been working to create a greener, brighter future for every child since 2014. But what exactly is a charitable foundation? A charitable foundation awards financial grants to charitable organisations. Typically these charitable organisations are aligned to the specific goals or values of the foundation. So in the case of OVO Foundation, we'll only fund charities or projects which help children and young people at the same time as the planet. Currently we fund projects with four partners through our Climate Changers programme, which has reached over 780,000 children and young people. We also give grants to 12 Community Impact Partners annually, for smaller scale projects such as community gardens, food education projects, or city farms. Our Community Impact Partners have reached over 7,000 children and young people, as well as giving OVO colleagues the opportunity to volunteer with them.  🤝 We'll introduce you to our all Climate Changers and Community Impact partners over the coming weeks. 💡 Why it matters: Every project we support must share the goals of the OVO Foundation, and help bring children and young people closer to nature to help kickstart climate action. 🔗 Funding charitable organisations' projects isn't the only thing we do.
