Arseny Barkovskiy, Head of Cyber and Field Operations, authored an article entitled "In Pursuit of Receding Hype: The Use of AI in Investigations". The article was featured on ThoughtLeaders4 FIRE | TL4FIRE Magazine, Issue 17. In late 2023 the world experienced peak AI hype, with much discussion ranging from the potential benefits of this technology to safety concerns and calls for its immediate regulation and even suspension of all associated research. As is often the case, the hype largely subsided while the technology continues to rapidly develop and is being quietly integrated into various aspects of our daily lives. 🌐 The Pentagon has launched a groundbreaking AI hackathon sponsored by DARPA, aiming to transform an increasingly difficult problem we are currently facing in the cybersecurity realm. Participants are tasked with developing AI programs that can autonomously scan and secure millions of lines of #opensource code. Success in this two-year contest could mean winning millions in prizes. 💰The initiative comes amidst a sharp increase in reported data breaches, which tripled between 2021 and 2023 according to the FBI's U.S. Internet Crime Complaint Center. Open-source #software, found in approximately 90% of commercial software, is under scrutiny due to its widespread use and potential vulnerabilities. This competition promises to drive innovation in cybersecurity technology, addressing critical challenges faced by the tech industry today. Very interesting to see the competition's progress and I am eager to hear further results come DEFCON this year! 🙂 https://lnkd.in/gngTq8Tr #Cybersecurity #AI #DARPAChallenge

🚀 The significance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in research has experienced rapid growth in recent years. 🌟 Managing an impressive portfolio of over 1,000 initiatives, the European Research Executive Agency has secured a substantial €1.7 billion in EU funding through the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs. These projects, spanning critical sectors such as health, environmental protection, democracy, security, and education, leverage AI capabilities to fuel optimization and innovation, promising transformative outcomes and upholding ethical standards. ⚠️ Nevertheless, akin to any technological advancement, the ascent of AI is accompanied by its share of challenges and risks. Concerns linger regarding biases in design, data usage, and implementation. 🔒 With the pursuit of a safe and ethical digital transformation at the forefront, the EU is taking proactive measures to regulate AI. The recent introduction of the AI Act signifies a significant milestone, aimed at ensuring that AI development remains safe, transparent, traceable, and non-discriminatory. 📜 The AI Act, in tandem with the Coordinated Plan on AI, not only delineates the European approach to AI regulation but also aligns with the overarching objectives of the European Green Deal. This comprehensive framework underscores the EU's steadfast commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and ethical standards in artificial intelligence. #AI #EU #EthicalAI #DigitalTransformation 🌱💻
Improving road safety and exposing deep fakes; these are just two examples of #AI-driven EU-funded research projects. Others are researching how to prevent identify theft and ways to build fair algorithmic decision-making tools. As #AritificalIntelligence comes with both benefits and challenges, the EU is funding AI-driven research that focuses on democracy, cybersecurity, and safety. This will ensure AI is ethical, while contributing to the digital, green, and inclusive future of Europe. I had the pleasure of attending TechEx NA with Marc Wellman this year and learned so much. It was great meeting so many people and observing new technologies in the cybersecurity and data space. I couldn't help but reflect on the trade-offs between AI, computation, security, privacy, and ROI during the event. Are companies seeing a payoff on their AI investments? How will cybersecurity and user privacy affect the future of AI? The future is unknown but I'm looking forward to seeing how the industry continues to evolve.
