LGBTQ+ History Month traces its origins back to the National Coming Out Day, which was first observed on October 11th, 1988. It was initiated by activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary as a day for people to come out as LGBTQ+ and allies, creating a safe space for visibility and acceptance. Throughout history, LGBTQ+ individuals have faced discrimination, persecution, and marginalization. However, their resilience and bravery have paved the way for progress. From the Stonewall Riots in 1969, which sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, to the Supreme Court's legalization of same-sex marriage in 2015, there's a rich tapestry of milestones that have brought us closer to equality. As we celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, let's remember that the fight for equality continues. Support and allyship are crucial, and together, we can work towards a world where everyone can live authentically, free from discrimination and prejudice.

✨ LGBTQ+ History Month ✨ In case you didn't know, February is LGBTQ+ History month. Last week, to kick things off, Lucy Morgan and Seba Dyer joined a panel discussion for Campaign LGBTQ+ on allyship in the work place - there was some really interesting takeaways, so we thought we would share some of them throughout the month. 👉 Allyship Tip 1: Check your privilege 👈 Recognising your own privilege helps you to be more supportive to all marginalised groups, not just LGBTQ+ people. It forces you to view things through a different lens, and opens your eyes to inclusion. Reflecting and recognising your own unearned privileges in different aspects of your life allows you to support others who do not benefit in the same way and be a better ally to those who need it! #lgbtqhistorymonth #inclusion #allyship #podtalent

Let’s debunk myths and spread the truth! Here are common misconceptions about the LGBTQ+ community we need to address. 1. Lifestyle Choice: The false belief that being LGBTQ+ is a choice rather than an inherent aspect of one’s identity. 2. Uniform Experience: The assumption that all LGBTQ+ people have the same experiences and challenges. 3. Gender and Sexuality Confusion: Confusing gender identity with sexual orientation. 4. Stereotyping: Attributing certain behaviors or characteristics to all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Addressing these misconceptions is important for understanding and acceptance.

FREE On-Demand Webinar Engagement in the Black Community Black and LGBTQ+: Understanding Intersectional Treatment Conversations According to the most recent Gallup Daily Tracking Poll, more than 1.2 million adults in the United States identify as both Black and LGBTQ+; that’s 40% of LGBTQ+ adults (Gallup Daily Tracking Poll, 2021). Critical issues in the Black community and critical issues in the LGBTQ+ community equally impact disparities for individuals who represent both communities. When examining intersectionality, counselors must understand that a patient’s life cannot be easily explained by single categories, such as gender, race and sexual orientation. https://lnkd.in/eQtE-3Rx

✨ LGBTQ+ History Month ✨ In case you didn't know, February is LGBTQ+ History month. This month, we’ve been sharing tips on how you can be a better ally to the LGBTQ+ community, including how checking your own privilege helps you to be more supportive, calling out discrimination, and remembering that everyone is unique with individual lived experiences. 👉 Allyship Tip 4: Be receptive to feedback 👈 Being open, receptive and listening to feedback from other people is so important. They may want to highlight something you could have done differently, give some advice so you can be more supportive, or educate you on their lived experiences or those of the LGBTQ+ community. Listening, not being defensive when being corrected, and allowing the other person to share openly with you will all go towards enabling you to be a better ally and better support to your LGBTQ+ peers! #lgbtqhistorymonth #inclusion #allyship #podtalent

It’s LGBTQ+ History Month! Over the years the Historical Association has started to gather a selection of articles, resources and podcasts that explore LGBTQ+ histories in the UK and sometimes in other cultures. For LGBTQ+ History Month 2024 we have brought together some articles and resources and we are in the process of commissioning some more that we hope to bring you later in the year. After all, the month is the start of an opportunity, not the end of the discussion. Not only is LGBTQ+ history often unfamiliar to many groups, but the fact that the language around sexuality and gender identification has changed across time, in different cultures and with different levels of exclusion, legal constraint and societal acceptance means that it has frequently been hidden or ignored.
