Jason Watt (he/him) CD's words hit the mark. Advocis, stop complaining about your critics, who, BTW, are entirely valid in their criticism, and get you to act together or, better yet do us all a favour and fold. One more thing: Treat your members with the simple respect of being transparent. Case in point: Instead of hand waving away the questions about these cash-value life insurance policies that you for some reason own, by simply saying, "they are old and have performed well," maybe use it as an opportunity to be transparent and answer the obvious questions: - Whose lives are they on? - Why were they sold in the first place? - Who got paid the commissions for these? If this is innocent, you should have no issue disclosing this information. If something not above board happened here, come clean. Either way, cursory dismissals are not the way to treat your members.

Our recent November PD session with Steve Barrett on pastoral care was both impactful and reflective. It challenged me to rethink my role not just as a teacher, but as a steady, positive force in my students’ lives. The session began with us recalling influential adults in our lives, which helped me reconnect with the power of a supportive presence. It then led us to consider one focus student—someone who could benefit from a deeper, more intentional connection. This exercise highlighted my potential to create a meaningful impact through authentic care and empathy. An excerpt from "The Invisible Classroom by Kirke Olson" hit home, emphasizing that human brains learn best in the context of loving relationships. This perspective reminded me how crucial it is for students to feel safe, seen, and valued. The questions we reflected on drove me to think about how I can make each student feel essential in our class: a) That they are loved and cared for, b) That they are appreciated, c) That each of them matters deeply to our classroom community, and d) That they mean more to me than the content I’m teaching. To make these ideas tangible, I came away with three simple but powerful strategies to bring into my teaching practice: 1. Morning Greetings: Meeting each student at the door with a positive welcome to show that they’re valued from the start of each day. 2. Empathy in Behavior: Recognizing student behavior as communication, not taking it personally, and responding with understanding. 3. Intentional Check-Ins: Making time to connect personally with every student within a few weeks, whether it’s asking about their family, noticing if they’re feeling down, or cheering on their latest interests. Lastly, "Priya Parker’s The Art of Gathering" reinforced the importance of intentionality in our interactions. The way we gather and engage with students can shape how they see their role in the classroom. As teachers, we model the values we want to instill; students observe our actions closely. This PD reminded me that by making each student feel valued beyond academics, I create a learning environment where they are willing to engage and thrive. It reaffirmed that my role is as much about human connection as it is about teaching. Thank you, Steve, and thanks to our school, Chatsworth, for organizing this valuable PD workshop that deepened our understanding of pastoral care and its impact on our students’ lives. #stevebarrett #chatsworthinternationalschool #education #pastoralcare #internationalschool
We had a fantastic 2-day workshop on pastoral care and advisory programme building with Steve Barrett from Wildwood School in LA this weekend. Steve flew over and will be flying back tomorrow. As my father would have said, Steve helped us to ‘whet our whistle’ on all things pastoral and being intentionally student-centered. Chatsworth has been awarded Gold as the top community school two years in a row and we are short-listed for the award again this year but there is always more to do. Fantastic weekend. Exhausting but what a wonderful way to spend a couple of days - discussing opportunities to help all students in our school with colleagues. Thank you, Steve, and thank you to our staff.

Recently, I came across an article discussing the state of charter schools, and it struck me how many misconceptions still exist about them. It's clear that even in 2024, there's confusion, with some still equating charter schools with private institutions. As school leaders, authorizers, alliances, coalitions, associations, and vendors, it's incumbent upon us to dispel these myths and educate the public about the reality of charter schools. The NC Association for Public Charter Schools recently shared a Storytelling Toolkit- have you seen it? At Hubrich Contracting, Inc., we're committed to supporting charter schools in navigating these misconceptions and thriving in today's educational landscape. Let's work together to ensure that the facts about charter schools are known far and wide. School choice is a critical component of our education system, and it's essential that everyone has access to accurate information to make informed decisions. #CharterSchools #Education #SchoolChoice #Empowerment #CommunityEducation

Why it Matters
Thank you to the Westbrook Public School district for bringing vegetable and fruit production trainings to their students. The produce that was harvested during our time, grown from the greenhouse, went directly to students and to the Westbrook Highschool as a pilot effort for expanding access to locally sourced foods. Thank you to Kellie Hall, Equity Resources Coordinator for the Westbrook school department. Also, a big thank you to Hannah Smalls and Mariah Krauss for your work with the Compass Alt. Ed program. And also, to Chelsea Preston youth lead. Your work and dedication don’t go unnoticed, and we thank you. Together, we can make a difference. Now more than ever we need to come together to lift the younger generation to be the best they can be, and set them up for success. 🌿 🧑🏽🌾👩🏿🌾👨🌾🌿

On the months of October and November, Ayala Coop, together with volunteers from DepEd, Ayala Foundation Inc., Ayala Land Inc. and BPI organized Catch-Up Friday Sessions for young learners. The event engaged students in interactive activities such as storytelling and math challenges, designed to enhance their reading, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. This initiative was part of Ayala Coop’s Alagang Coop program, which focuses on addressing educational gaps and empowering the youth. Through these sessions, Ayala Coop and its partners reinforced their commitment to community development, fostering an environment where children are equipped with the tools to achieve their full potential. This effort highlights Ayala Coop’s dedication to inclusive progress, sustainable education, and the brighter futures of young minds. #BrighterFuture #CatchUpFriday https://lnkd.in/g32FzbSq
