Recently we checked in with Syed Imran Ali, Lead for the Safe Water Optimization Tool to find out how useful the impact case study we developed was: "We have found the case study incredibly valuable to have an independently validated and externally commissioned resource that describes the problem, how the SWOT effectively addresses the problem and outlines its cost effectiveness. We have used it to support funding applications and have started to use it to advocate for uptake of the SWOT in the sector. So having the case study report in our back pocket as an externally generated validated resource, helps us make that case." Are you thinking about what resources would help you evidence the changes you are trying to achieve and learn about what is working and what isn't- then get in touch. Perhaps a comprehensive impact case study is the answer! You can read about our process and see the case studies - link in the comments

Advanced warnings of effects relating to weather allows water companies to prepare for impactful weather events ahead of time, aiding in their operational decision making. This could include cancelling non-essential planned maintenance to ensure all the infrastructure is available, or changing rotas to ensure that there are enough call centre staff and engineers available to deal with any incidents. Early identification of low-risk periods could also allow for maintenance activities to take place. We’re working with Thames Water and Ofwat to create bespoke sub-seasonal forecasts for water companies to highlight the risk of high clean water demand and weather-related impacts on wastewater operations further in advance than currently possible. The service is launching to the water industry at the Thames Water X Met Office: Using Sub-Seasonal Forecasting to Improve Operational Decision Making event on 23 January. This event explores weather-related challenges faced in fresh water supply and wastewater processing operations, as well as an overview of the science and methodology of the sub-seasonal forecasts and use cases to demonstrate its value.
