Some leadership trends you might be seeing emerge this year. I like this one the most, when I see it in action ... 2. Walk The Walk. Leaders will regularly need to re-examine if they are on track and are still aligned with their mission statement, values and purpose, and leading clearly with those at the forefront. During tumultuous times we need responsible leaders more than ever. You can't become a successful leader if you can't manage the people aspect of business. This means encouraging engagement, creating a psychologically safe environment, and attracting and retaining talent. Here are some questions to ask yourself that address these issues: How do we connect people to our purpose? How do we motivate people and keep them going? How do we remove the fear of conflict? How do we build resilience in our people? How do we attract the best people to work with us? What do we need in our talent base—now and in the future? Respect is an essential component of effective leadership. Every functional relationship is founded on respect. Leaders who treat each other and team members with respect, value their contributions, and foster an environment of mutual understanding and appreciation, will cultivate a positive and productive work culture. Respect fuels trust, encourages open communication, and empowers employees to share their ideas and perspectives without fear of judgment or retribution. When leaders demonstrate respect, they inspire loyalty, boost morale, all of which will result in enhanced performance.   Takeaways: Model respect by focusing on the purpose and goals of the business, behaving with professionalism. Listen to your partners and staff, building functional working relationships through regular in-person contact. Look each other in the eye. Establish a culture where back door conversations and where ridicule and gossip are not tolerated and called out as negative behavior. Amplify positive sum behaviors and set boundaries of what is permissible. Disagreement and variance should be encouraged and conflicted facilitated. If these elements are personalized or politicized a toxic environment will emerge with negative outcomes resulting. I just finished reading "Everybody Matters" by Bob Chapman and Raj Sisodia, and I'm truly inspired by their approach to leadership. Bob’s approach, which he calls “Truly Human Leadership” centers around CARING. A seemingly non-radical approach with a radical impact. Here are a few of my favorite takeaways:   Caring Cultivates Performance: This is the heartbeat of this book and of Truly Human Leadership. It centers on the reality that when you genuinely care about your people, they care back. And beyond warm feelings, this care translates into real business value, driven by improved commitment, engagement and performance of employees. Caring also breeds connection—one of our core needs as humans and employees. And when we demonstrate care as leaders, we signal to our employees that they matter, and when they feel they matter, it becomes a win-win for all. People Over Products: At Barry Wehmiller, Bob is clear that while they manufacture great products, that’s not the business they’re in. They’re in the business of growing and unleashing people. While they happen to make exceptional products, that is not WHY they exist. They exist to elevate the potential of their people, and it is this north star that guides their every leadership action. Great products are the inevitable byproduct.   Creating a Culture of Growth: To unleash the power of their people, Barry Wehmiller had to create an enabling culture, one that gives employees a seat at the proverbial table rather than muting their voices through micromanagement and top-down control. The success of Barry Wehmiller can be attributed in large part to their prioritization of employee development, driven by leadership actions that support employees in discovering, utilizing and growing their gifts.    Use a Leadership Checklist: To translate their “Guiding Principles of Leadership” (their foundational leadership principles) into action, Barry Wehmiller created a leadership checklist for all leaders to follow. At Barry Wehmiller, any time the leadership team creates a new approach, framework or set of principles, they don’t post it on a wall or put it in a handbook and call it a day. They create a tangible tool to accompany it, ensuring accountability and consistency in execution. This is critical for any organization to truly transform their ideals into cultural or structural shifts, which take time, repetition and committed action.   At its core, Everybody Matters is a book about connecting to our humanity and is a refreshing and powerful reminder of the need to prioritize people and purpose to drive performance.
