In the heart of Amsterdam's Vondelpark lies a testament to Dutch ingenuity and community process ... a trash receptacle like no other. At first glance, its design may puzzle the passerby, with what appears to be an integrated beverage holder. This innovative bin tackles multiple community process challenges simultaneously, emblematic of the Dutch penchant for practical problem-solving. The Netherlands has adopted a deposit system for beverage containers. A modest deposit of €0.15 is appended to each purchase but is refundable upon return. However, the flaw in this system lies in human behavior. Not everyone is inclined to lug around empty bottles until they encounter a redemption point. Consequently, countless containers end up needlessly discarded, squandering both resources and potential earnings. Enter the "donation rings" or doneerringen. These humble yet ingenious devices streamline the process for those in need to collect abandoned containers and retrieve the deposit. No longer burdened with carrying surplus bottles, individuals are more inclined to partake in recycling efforts. Moreover, the monetary gains find their way into the pockets of those who can truly benefit from them. In a world where community victories are often hard-fought, Amsterdam presents a model of efficiency with its elegant solution. This trifecta of benefits encapsulates the essence of societal progress. It's a testament to the power of simple yet astute innovations to address both minor inconveniences and grand challenges. #process #engineering #community #sustainable #innovation

I'M PROUD OF STREET GRABING: There will be no cars here, it may be full of people, Pop-up shop, insects and toilet rolls. The spectrum becomes broad on lawn and asphalt. SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE IN MY HOMETOWN. On Saturday 8 June, "Green Day" will be organized for the first time in Haugesund, closing the street. The entire area will be filled with various sales, stands, food and drink, games and various activities - A meeting place for the whole family. People need to get their act together. We cannot continue as we are doing - We are talking about a consumer society and the protection of nature and the environment. The theme of "Green Day" is focused on SUSTAINABILITY, REUSE, ENVIRONMENT and responsible CONSUMPTION. The city's environmental station HIM has product samples and information about composting, and also has a pop-up from the second-hand shop. There will be sales of used bicycles and various items. It will also be possible to hand in hazardous waste. The starting point was a dialogue around a campaign to reduce food waste in the municipality, but found that it could be fun to have an even broader focus on sustainability. Human sustainability is also emphasized. As a resident of Brazil, married to a Dane, and parent to two spirited half-Viking children, Denmark holds a special place in my heart. Thus, it’s with great admiration that I share a remarkable story unfolding in the streets of Aarhus, Denmark – a city’s resolute campaign against single-use waste, with coffee cups serving as the initial battleground. Could this herald the dawn of a “Reuse Renaissance”? In the bustling urban milieu, where glass bottles, plastic packaging, and disposable coffee cups once cluttered the sidewalks, a resounding call for change echoed from businesses and civic leaders alike. Witnessing the mounting piles of waste, they united in resolve, initiating a pioneering solution. Enter the innovative “reverse vending scheme,” a groundbreaking endeavor catalyzing a cultural shift. With an initial focus on coffee cups, this initiative builds upon Denmark’s esteemed tradition of deposit refund systems. Collaboration emerged as the cornerstone, with over 40 establishments joining forces, and 25 collection machines strategically deployed across the city. Yet, the journey towards sustainability encounters formidable obstacles. The allure of single-use convenience often eclipses the appeal of reusability. To surmount this challenge, two pivotal solutions beckon: expansion and policy innovation. Inspired by Denmark’s success, I am eager to replicate this concept here in Brazil. It’s incredibly inspiring to witness the effectiveness of such initiatives, and I believe they hold immense potential for our communities. If anybody shares this vision or has innovative ideas to contribute, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Together, let’s turn inspiration into action and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future in Brazil.

THE BALTIC SEA WASTE LAB 🔬 Ingeniørens PRO-Medier has shed some nice warm light at the experimentation taking place on Bornholm in support of Vision 2032: a phase-out of waste incineration, an increase in recycling, etc. Some key takeaways: ➡️ Bornholm raised eyebrows in 2019 with its vision statement, setting the stage for societal scale experiments as a Danish and European test island. ➡️ Described as a green transition outpost, the island’s approximately 40,000 inhabitants are lab rats for new waste solutions in a country with one of the highest per capita consumption rates. ➡️ BOFA’s project officers, 7 in all, operate out of an obscure location and handle a wide array of partnership activities. ➡️ One project provided a shoutout is Retail Relooped which targets circular food packaging solutions with Coop i Danmark and Żabka Polska. ➡️ Another project is Circular Economy Beyond Waste (CEBW) which has helped identify hotspots for interventions in multilayer food and beverage carton waste. The article ends by saying: “The road to the 2032 vision is not paved yet, but placed stone by stone, built by numerous small and large projects which, with a bit of luck, will be able to make the trip from the Sunshine to “yonder”, which the locals from Bornholm call the rest of the country.” Poetic, really. ♻️

Sustainable business developer, director, Re-commerce retailer, social media manager, hospitality industry mentor and consultant.
Cork Business of the Year 2024 Finalist. We are absolutely delighted to be one of the three finalists in the "Sustainable Business Innovation" category, of the Cork Business Association annual awards. Seeing organisations such as the CBA recognising the importance of sustainability and placing it front and centre of their policies, including their long term ideas for transport and city living is as important as this award, to us. StyleBarn is an online platform that sells goods according to the principles of the circular economy. Notebooks, handmade in Cork, from recycled coffee cups, by BadlyMadeBooks 100% recycled wool throws, designed in Cork, by YAWUW Tumblers and carafes, made from used wine bottles, by Rebottled Bracelets and lanyards, made from a lost fishing net recovered from Bantry bay, by BRACENET Vintage goods, starting a new life, again. KeepCups, to replace those 200 million single use cups thrown away annually in Ireland, by KeepCup We are growing our range, within the parameters of not wanting to sell more "stuff we don't need", but wanting to sell things that either already exist, or will replace single use items. A mentor observed early on that if we were having to spend our time, explaining the need for a functioning circular economy, that was time that we should have spent selling. He was, of course, correct. But StyleBarn is more than just a store, it is a platform for change. Our blogs explain what and why we are doing, without being too preachy. We are passionate about what we are doing and why and if we can disrupt the model of single use products, fast fashion and disposable consumerism, that, to us, is a win. Our greatest achievement to date, was being selected to create a more sustainable Christmas hamper for the Cork headquarters of a multi-national company. The feedback was incredibly positive and eighty other companies received a corporate gift that also started conversations. Starting a business based on encouraging people to "Buy Better, Buy Less" goes against every principle of endless growth, but marries perfectly with the principles of StyleBarn. Thank you to the CBA for recognising what we stand for including us in this final. As this is LinkedIn™️ let us say, but with hand on heart, that we are genuinely humbled. #sustainablebusiness #cbaawards2024 #circulareconomy #green #stylebarn
