Last month, BGS had the privilege of attending the Fund Manager Cohort Convening, hosted by the Boston Impact Initiative (BII). This remarkable gathering took place right after the November election and highlighted the critical importance of connection, collaboration, and shared purpose in advancing economic equity. While we all come from diverse backgrounds and fulfill different roles, coming together in person reminds us that we are not alone in this vital work of ecosystem building. The convening offered an invaluable opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to building a more equitable economy - one that serves all communities and remains resilient in the face of challenges. The collective insights, diverse perspectives, and unwavering solidarity shared during the event further strengthened our resolve to drive meaningful, systemic change. To everyone who contributed to this impactful gathering: thank you for your dedication, passion, and partnership! And a special shout out to Julia Parker from Appalachian Community Capital and Dr. Brahm Rhodes from Malaika Ventures who helped our executive director, Kerry Bowie, facilitate a small group session on the "Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) + Climate" during the convening. And special appreciation goes to Dwaign Tyndal and Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE) for sponsoring this work at BGS. Lastly, we want to thank those listed here who were able to join us for dinner after the convening to discuss how we best leverage community development finance institutions (CDFIs) and others to make sure that barriers are removed and the funds from the GGRF actually make it to the environmental justice communities targeted by the Justice40 Initiative at both speed and scale. We are excited to announce that Andrew Marino has been named chairman of the Calvert Impact Board of Directors. Marino, partner at Summa Equity and former vice-chair of the board, brings several decades of private market investment and corporate governance experience, including significant time in impact and climate-oriented investing. "We're in the process of creating a new strategic plan for Calvert Impact and I know it will benefit from Andrew's expertise and his energy as we begin implementing it," said Calvert Impact CEO Jennifer Pryce. Marino will take over for Bart Harvey, who served as chairman for a decade. Harvey is the former chairman and CEO of Enterprise Community Partners, a national nonprofit focused on creating access to decent affordable homes for millions of families in the U.S. Harvey helped Congress create the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, which provides financing for the majority of affordable rental homes in the country. He also led Enterprise's launch of the Green Communities initiative – an unprecedented commitment to use sustainable development's benefits for low-income communities nationwide. "Bart has had a profound impact in shaping Calvert Impact into the innovative organization we are today, and we are tremendously grateful for his tenure as the board chair. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding Calvert Impact through immense growth over the last decade. His dedication and insight have been invaluable to our success." said Pryce. 💚At The Russell Family Foundation, we’re using our resources to create climate action, and we’re not alone. At a convening we hosted this year, we shared insights and collaborated with the David Rockefeller Fund, Sierra Club Foundation, McConnell Foundation, and more to push forward on climate solutions that promote equity and justice. Together, we’re making strides in collective strength, advancing real-world emissions reductions, and prioritizing transparency. Our journey demonstrates how even smaller organizations can have a big impact by joining forces and committing to climate-aligned investing. Our partnership, Catalytic Capital Partners (CCP), with Mission Driven Finance (MDF) harnesses the strengths of both organizations to efficiently connect more capital with communities in need. By joining forces, we're making a greater impact in the philanthropic and impact-investing sectors. Current funds held under CCP include: Care Access Real Estate, a REIT operated by MDF that purchases, constructs, renovates and maintains real estate assets across the United State to be leased to childcare providers, and the Initiative for Inclusive Entrepreneurship which works to mobilize philanthropic and private capital alongside the federally funded State Small Business Credit Initiative ("SSBCI"), to help SSBCI expand capital flow for underserved communities, accelerating innovative and inclusive solutions through direct investments and the capitalization of impactful intermediaries like Community Development Financial Institutions, high-impact credit funds and diverse venture capital fund managers. Look for announcements this summer of two new funds under CCP. We are excited to expand this partnership and move more money, in more ways, to more people and places.
