⭐𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀💪 Laser processing is a more environmentally friendly alternative to many chemical- and energy-intensive surface treatments. Laser processes can reduce CO2 emissions within value chains through efficient processing and resource optimization by using specially tailored laser-based surface treatments that replace harmful chemical etchants such as HNO3 and directly contribute to energy reduction in manufacturing processes such as injection molding. We are part of the SYNTECS Project consortium and have reached an important #milestone. We have finally succeeded in combining different laser technologies in one product. This makes it possible to produce functional structures with structural dimensions ranging from the size of a blood cell to half the size of a hair. The technological basis here is both Direct Laser Writing #DLW and Direct Laser Interference Patterning #DLIP. The video demonstrates how quickly one can switch between the different technologies. 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 🔔 🔄 Although #centrifugal #microfluidics, also known as #Lab_on_a_disk (LOD), offers a promising solution for liquid pumping and manipulation with minimal instrumentation, many researchers and engineers still favor the #Lab_on_a_chip (LOC) system. This preference is evident in conference presentations and the number of companies servicing researchers in this area. While there are several reasons for this preference, there are key limitations to centrifugal systems: 1️⃣ #Unidirectional flow control can be a significant limitation. The outward flow direction dictated by centrifugal force complicates microfluidic disk design, requiring expertise to create functional, cost-effective units that operate microfluidic functions (such as metering, mixing, and separation) within a reasonable time frame, preferably less than a minute. 2️⃣ #Disk fabrication is typically costly and time-consuming, requiring expertise in CNC machining to engrave microfluidic circuits on machinable materials like PMMA. #Resin #3Dprinting offers a more cost-effective and rapid prototyping solution, but finding a building plate to print a 10 cm disk for a required resolution significantly increases costs. 3️⃣ Despite being cost-effective compared to LOC benches, fabricating a centrifugal bench requires programming and instrumentation skills before conducting any #bioassays. 4️⃣ A robust and simple valving system is essentially required to #control the #fluid flow, but simultaneously achieving simplicity and #cost-efficiency is already a challenge. 📝 In our recent article titled "𝐅𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐀 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐯𝐞-𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐅𝐥𝐮𝐢𝐝 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬", published in Sensors and Actuators B (Chemical 8.4), we addressed the aforementioned LOD drawbacks by introducing the "𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝑶𝑵/𝑶𝑭𝑭 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐤" strategy.
