Overusing Fasteners: More Isn’t Always Better! When combining plies, it might seem like more fasteners = stronger structure. But too many can weaken your material, creating stress points and potential damage. Never let your contractor splice your beam ply/plies in between supports no matter how many plies you may have. The takeaway? Always talk to your structural engineer before making any changes. Today, let's dive into one of the most popular types of simple steel connections: the partial depth end plate connection. It's common practice for the plate to be welded ONLY to the beam web. To achieve the necessary flexibility and ductility, here are some key recommendations: 1) For positional restraint, it's advisable to place the end plate close to the top flange. 2) To ensure adequate torsional restraint for the beam, the end plate depth should be around 60% of the supported beam depth. These steps allow the beam to be designed with a buckling length of 1L in scenarios where lateral restraint is absent. For the connection to be classified as 'nominally pinned,' a thinner end plate (10mm or 12mm) is recommended, with a reasonable bolt gauge. However, if a stiffer plate is used, the connection may become semi-rigid, requiring careful consideration of the moment transferred to the supporting element and the connection's rotation capacity. According to research, these additional moments tend to redistribute into the beams—something I look forward to exploring further in the near future. One of the key checks for a tension anchor is a breakout cone, which can be a bit tricky. While one anchor is manageable, dealing with several closes to each other or in reinforced foundations requires employing engineering judgment. We can model and assess steel anchoring components very effectively. However, when it comes to concrete, it poses a challenge. Yet, when we transfer the results from the 𝗖𝗕𝗙𝗘𝗠 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 to the concrete 𝟯𝗗 𝗖𝗦𝗙𝗠 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹, add rebars, and everything falls into place. Then, we can accurately evaluate the stress levels in both the concrete and the reinforcement.
