Bryan Construction places a high value on continuous training and development. We recently brought together team members from various departments and functions to learn more about their peers' daily work. This type of education not only helps us understand each other's roles better but also fosters a sense of investment in our growth as employee-owners.
We learned how our contributions affect each other, the crucial role of clear and open communication across teams, and the value of cross-functional skills in an organization. The more we can understand each other's roles and functions, the better we can be equipped to remove impediments and obstacles, and the better we can create momentum as a cohesive team, feeling connected and valued.
We topped off this training with the momentum of zip lining—an opportunity to take a leap of faith with each other and continue working toward achieving shared goals and success.
Bryan Construction will continue this training, and we look forward to bringing new team members to the table. Their fresh perspectives and unique skills will enrich our understanding and help us grow together as a stronger, more cohesive team.
These suggestions offer practical guidance for enhancing the effectiveness of training and development within your organization, resulting in increased ROI and fostering a culture of continuous learning.

In an industry with generational gaps and technological transformation reverse mentoring is an important tool to ensure knowledge is shared and supports multi generational development. This has been embraced at Suffolk on site and in our learning culture.
On this Teachers' Day, let's acknowledge the vital role of not only educators but also safety mentors who play a pivotal role in the workplace.
Why is the role of Safety Mentors Important?
↪️ These mentors guide new hires and juniors, imparting vital knowledge and skills that enhance workplace safety.
↪️ When new employees have someone like a mentor who understands the challenges of the position, it becomes easier to adapt and deal with stress.
↪️ Safety mentorship programs ensure fewer incidents and injuries by offering guidance to those with less experience. By sharing insights and stepping in when they notice unsafe practices, experienced individuals create a safer work environment.
↪️ Additionally, when employees understand how to execute their tasks correctly, efficiency increases, and production thrives. The tips and tricks learned over years of experience can significantly boost a team’s performance.
↪️ A workplace that encourages collaboration and support leads to improved morale. The positive impact of safety mentors stretches far beyond productivity—they help shape a culture of safety and support.
Safety Mentors aren’t born - they’re made!
Safety mentors (whether formal or informal) don’t simply come into existence—they evolve into that role through years of technical expertise and a solid understanding of mentorship methods.
To be an effective safety mentor, they must have a deep understanding of the industry, coupled with the ability to build strong relationships and communicate clearly. Competence is key, but so is credibility, which is earned through a proven track record of success and safety achievements.
A great mentor is also someone willing to acknowledge and accommodate mistakes, offering a supportive platform where juniors feel comfortable speaking up and learning.
🎉 Cheers to all those Safety mentors who provide invaluable guidance, equipping the next generation of professionals with the tools they need to succeed!

CLIP - Lessons Learnt – Sharing – Training – Continuous Improvement
‘CLIP’ is our ‘Continuous Learning Improvement Process’ but it’s so much more than an acronym; it’s a better way of working to improve productivity, safety, quality, and reduce costly errors.
“What the CLIP is, is getting the lessons learnt from a thousand years of collective experience in construction that’s in people’s heads, documenting it, training on it, and creating a constant feedback loop on things that are going well, and things that aren’t going well,” explains our Director Andrew Deveson.
This innovative approach breaks down silos between our project teams by providing our team with a company communication platform to share mistakes, near misses, innovations and better ways of working, all with the aim of identifying the most efficient solutions to problems. Recognising the value of sharing mistakes, we also utilise the power of story telling to embed our lessons learnt in our staff training program.
“Productivity in construction has lagged behind the wider economy and that’s a nation affecting issue,” says Andrew. “It’s in everyone’s interest for the whole industry to get better. We think this whole learning, improvement, training is where it’s at, and it’s how we (as an industry) can really drive productivity growth.”

Have you ever heard “why do I need to know this? This isn’t what I do?” I have. And while I understand there is only so much time in the day and so much bandwidth within our brains, I try to remind myself and those around me that cross training is important.
Cross training is a critical component in any professional setting as it allows team members to have a solid understanding of each other's roles and responsibilities. By being knowledgeable about what one another does, teammates can step in and assist when needed, ensuring operations continue smoothly even if someone is absent or overwhelmed with tasks. This not only promotes teamwork and collaboration but also increases overall efficiency within the organization.
In addition, cross training helps employees develop new skills and gain a broader perspective on the business as a whole. It fosters a culture of continuous learning and adaptability, which are essential qualities for success in today's rapidly changing work environment. Therefore, prioritizing cross training among teammates is vital for creating a cohesive and high-performing team.
Today, I watched this video that was both harrowing and enlightening. It featured crane operators on a construction site, engaged in a tandem lift - a task that epitomizes the essence of teamwork. They were tasked with manoeuvring a large beam, requiring synchronized lifting and lowering by two cranes.
However, teamwork faltered when one crane, poorly positioned and operating beyond its limits, began to lift off the ground and toppled over, crashing into a nearby building. The consequence for the other crane was catastrophic, as the load's drop dragged it towards a shaft, only to be halted by a fortunate ledge. Miraculously, both drivers survived.
This incident goes beyond the realm of a near-miss on a construction site; it speaks volumes about the dynamics of teamwork in our daily lives and workplaces. Teamwork is often romanticized as a seamless interplay of efforts, but this situation paints a vivid picture of what happens when coordination and communication within a team break down.
In any operation, if a team member fails to understand or adhere to their role, choosing to operate independently or beyond limits, the results can be disastrous. This is where the importance of adequate planning and training becomes starkly evident. Each member of a team must not only be aware of their role but also understand the limits within which they must operate – be it the capacity of a machine or their personal capabilities.
