Understand interior design as a profession outside the United States. New scholarship from the Journal of Interior Design, vol. 48, issue 2. Interior design as a relegated discipline in the academic and professional stage in Columbia Daniel Ernesto Ronderos Lopez https://lnkd.in/gXUi3eVY Interior design in Colombia is a discipline that, throughout its history, has been directly linked with architecture, up to the point that the collective perception is that an Architect, regardless of their academic and professional background, should be more than capable of conceiving and designing interior spaces as the Colombian CPNAA’s (Professional National Council of Architecture and Auxiliary Professions) guidebook suggests: The applicability of a professional architect’s commitment is directly related to designing a new building and the other multiple professional services such as remodeling, extensions, reconstructions, interior design, and similar (Vargas Caicedoet et al., 2004, p. 11). This situation has created a hierarchical model that subjugates the Interior Designer to the pre-determined conditions set up by the Architect of the building creating a second class of spatial designer who is not regularly acknowledged when performing as a project stakeholder. In this article, we demonstrate that this hierarchical model in Colombia is institutionalized and embedded, not only in popular perception but in academic curricula, professional associations, and even by decree from the Education Ministry. We also illustrate how Interior Designers in Colombia have worked around this preconceived system by using design thinking and human-centered design as methods for creating competitive value propositions that Colombian Architects have yet to provide to their clients. Finally, we determine the ideal set of tools that Interior Designers must have to be significant stakeholders when it comes to project decision making. #IDEC #SAGE #interiordesign #interiorarchitecture #columbia
